Speedwell and Chickweed in new lawn
Comments (3)Those winter weeds are most common with a fall renovation. It is not too late and don't worry about the seeds. You can kill them now with a broadleaf weed killer such as weed-be-gone. For the prevention of crabgrass, apply a pre-emergent herbicide such as dimension according to label instructions. Crabgrass preventers go down when soil temps are 50 to 55 or when the yellow forsythia are in bloom. Corn Gluten Meal is a wonderful organic fertilizer but the weed control properties are dismal. It would take multiple applications over several seasons to be effective. Feel free to followup with additional questions. Comments (3)In a word Yes. Under ideal conditions a strong healthy turf will choke out chickweed. I had a thick infestation in a renovated area of KBG. After the KBG woke up and started to grow, it overtook the chickweed really fast. However, I did use weed-be-gone on those weeds so I couldn't say that cultural practices alone took my chickweed out. Here is what MSU says about chickweed "Common chickweed has a poorly developed root system as is a great candidate for mechanical removal (pulling). As a winter annual, chickweed is often an indicator of poor turf density. Outbreaks of chickweed in open areas will quickly die out in the spring. This production of new seed ensures a crop of chickweed for the following season. Improved turf density is critical to reducing common chickweed infestations." Comments (7)Thank you so much dchall! Last question and I'll get to work on this and report back with my results. Will it kill the desirable grass as well? What's been your observation? Do you just try to be selective when you do it and cross your fingers? I suppose I could try to be selective but it's a huge yard and the chickweed is as thick as astroturf. LOL. I suppose if you say it's dangerous to the good grass, I could go the chemical route, turn my back on the seeds, and go for a massive assault such as: 1.) late April - forget the seeds and kill the chickweed 2.) mid September - scalp, slit seed, fert, pre-M (tupersan or whatever is seedling safe) 3.) rest of my friggin' life - mow high, slave away, and do the right thang' for them picky gass plants Thanks again....See MoreWeed ID - kind of like chickweed or purple dead nettle, but not
Comments (6)Maybe "Veronica chamaedrys" although that is a spring or early summer grower. Henbit, "Lamium amplexicaule", aka dead or bee nettle, which will germinate and grow in September. Henbit is a winter annual and doing something now to remove it most likely will do more harm to the incoming grass then just leaving it alone. Whatever it is pulling it up will disturb those new grass roots and cause the grass to die....See Moregarycinchicago
