What color is it, and what does it smell like. SBM is cream colored, and smells like Tofu. Alfalfa is green and smells like grass. The term Soy Bean Meal is a little deceptive, it is not a powder, the texture is more like cracked corn and works just like a commercial fertilizer product in your spreader.

My mother used cottonseed hulls in her garden all her life. Her father did the same. He was 92 when he died she is now 84 and going strong. She just stopped growing a garden 3 or 4 years ago. Her Alabama clay soil is Black down to 18 inches or more. The cotton seed hulls have done her no harm as best we can tell. I have never used them in my garden. I get composted leaves from my city. I get one or two 7ft x 16ft trailer load every 1st and 3rd saturday each month.They load it for you. I have a small 36x120 ft garden I'm trying to make the soil better. I started this last year. Check with your city and see if they have a leaf compost program.

IÂm sure there are sufficient cattle, horse, sheep and chicken farms in Georgia to support some farm animal feed stores. Keep searching. Rural towns may be the best places to look. Alfalfa pellets (rabbit food) in 25 or 50 pound bags is good. Cotton seed meal is used. Corn meal or cracked corn is an excellent though mild fertilizer with fungal disease fighting properties. Cheap dog food has 8 to 10 percent protein in it and would work. Commercial organic fertilizers like Milorganite and Scotts organic fertilizer should be available at Home Depot or Lowes. Bill Hill

I am not an organic purist. I use organic fertilizers on my Tif419 lawn because I like the results. I regularly use CGM, cotton seed meal, soy bean meal, and occasionally Milorganite on my lawn. I usually rotate between the different grains and throw in Milorganite once per season. Bermuda is a nitrogen hog. I put out between 50 - 100 lbs of grain on my 4000 sq ft lawn monthly to keep it green. It's a little more expensive, but if you want "easy", go with the CGM. It's higher protein and you can use less of it. A 50 lb bag costs me almost $30 and will keep my lawn looking good for 6 weeks or so. Understand that my lawn is my hobby. I have the "golf course" look with my lawn and don't mind whatever work it takes. I switched to organic fertilizers 6 or 8 years ago just to see if I could get the golf course look with organic fertilization. Yes, you can. If you're not as OCD about your lawn as I am, I suspect you can get by with a lot less fertilization and still have a nice bermuda lawn.
