Here's a funny little orchid - Jay's site says this Cuban orchid is "very rare and endangered". It's pretty cute and the leaves are finely serrated which is the first I've ever seen in an orchid. I'm not sure how I feel about the flowers - they don't open fully and aren't very remarkable.

Oh and this guy is flowering *again* and it looks like another sheath is on it's way. Dend Peng Seng (tobaense x cruentum) is quickly becoming one of my favorites

Actually, I rather like it. But then again, I seem to have a thing for clusters of little flowers. I suppose it's part of the reason I don't grow the floofy catts. (The other being the certainty I don't have enough light.) One of my favs is Pleurothallis alata, and the flowers on that one are smaller than a housefly. Being almost constantly in bloom doesn't hurt either : )

I think I'm really going to have to get myself one of those Dends. That green and orange combo is really eyecatching. Is it a compact grower? Does it prefer being in your tank, or can it be grown in your avg room? And lastly, does it need lots of light to bloom?

Hey Calvin, The Epiweb looks interesting, and I love that it's recycled. This is the first time I've heard of it. The link has comments from Ray. I'm surprised the date is 2006. The good news is people have had time to test drive it. The site says it's a medium "that will always keep itself moist." This underwaterer is panicking. :) But then, from their site: "Watering schedules may be more frequent due to the fact that Epiweb hold less amount of water than a classic substrate. The risk of excess watering can more or less be considered eliminated. "Due to the fact that Epiweb is a inert material, and has no nutrients itself, the need for a good level of fertilizer is important. In a long perspective the level of nutrition must be slightly higher. We recommend about 20 % more. "Note! When you grow on the windowsill and in living areas you might experince the material to be a bit to fast drying. To solve this you can place a small amount of Sphagnum moss on top of the epiweb. In this way you have created a type of lid that breathe. You may have to water a bit more frequent in the beginning. When the plant have developed a good root mass, it has bigger possibilitys to profit from the watering and therefore the watering frequency can be decreased." I'm gonna ask Ray. I use T5s. I keep hearing about the importance of getting high output bulbs, but I have never seen a 'normal output' T5 before. I checked online and you an see an article here. Notice that the only difference between 'high output' and normal T5s is the wattage (28W vs 54W)...why would they invent a new term to describe a simple wattage difference is beyond me. The bottom line is, as long as you get 54W T-5 tubes, and a fixture that can support them (professional 'plant growing' ones include New Wave, Sunblaster etc...I use New Wave) you're fine. There is some discussion on the difference a good reflector makes, and some other guys will rant and rave about the 'superiority of brushed German aluminium'...I dunno :) - Brooke has some data on the improvement with CFLS, but I havent seen any data with different T5 reflectors yet. That said, back to your question, I don't grow too many cattleya types, so the only cattleya-types I have bloomed under T5s are C. forbesii (at 1.5 feet away), cattleyopsis cubensis (8" away) and a hybrid (LC Jungle Elf x Enc. cordigera (at 1 foot away)). I have intermedia and luteola there now (1.5 feet away), and actually I think it is too much light, although I know these are a bit lower light plants. I don't have a good light meter for readings, but I would recommend T5s for long narrow shelf-like grow areas, as they look good and are easy, compared to adjusting bulbs and multiple bulb reflectors. It depends on your grow area though

Hey Q - what components are you speaking of? The sphag? I grabbed some quick photos - they're not very good, but it's kind of hard to capture things in there. I'll try and get some more later! This is the whole tank. There's about 5 inches of water beneath the egg crate because I was experimenting to see what this would do for humidity. It helps, but I've run into two problems a) algae is growing and b) the water from the misters is causing the water level to rise too high. I think I will drain it soon and just rely on the misters to supply humidity. I'm not sure what I should do about the excess water that will inevitably accumulate at the base of the tank because it doesn't evaporate fast enough... These are the misting nozzles I'm using. They are a little hard to attach to the edge of the tank though so I need to think of a better way to stick em on. A view from the top, right side. Yes, that is a jumellea comorensis mounted on a piece of loofah! It sounds like a much better idea than it actually is (I thought - hey it's kind of tree-ferny in texture - wouldn't this be a great renewable cheap source of mounts!). It gets dry way too fast, I'd say more like cork than like tree fern. A view of the left side. Phal enjoying the tank...equestris seems pretty sensitive to high light actually I'm using the tank for rehab...this guy was pretty much rotten to the core when I pulled it out of the mess it was potted in 2 months ago. Threw it into S/H and it's putting out new roots already. Guess the light and humidity help! I'll snap some photos of the angs (only leaves and roots though) soon! Whitecat8 Ive been growing in terrariums 7-8 yrs. now and I have them closed off to air. The only new air they get is when I open them to check a plant or to water. Watering is needed usually every 2-3 months this way. A couple I have going need a bit of water only once a year. My orchids and Hoya's I grow this way love it. I have 18 terrariums going at this time. The teardrop ornaments have a 2 inch round opening so unless the opening is covered with saran wrap it would have air flow. Ive eyed the Den. toressae several times and its def. on my "gotta have cause I can't live without" list! There's a few others on my list of course and as soon as Oklahoma sees Spring I'll be getting a nice order out to Andy. I mainly grow mini and micro mini orchids. I met Andy at an orchid show in TX. and he is a very nice guy and full of info! It was nice to hand pick my orchids and see some he had just got in and hadn't put on his site yet.,,,,Debbie

Thanks guys! Q - I am a HUGE fan of the orange+green for sure. It is a very compact grower (canes reach about 8-10" tall max). I do have it in my tank, but the humidity in there isn't very high. Light is quite high, but I am curious whether it can do with lower light, as I have successfully burned one of this hybrid's parents (dend tobaense) when I made the assumption that it could handle the same amount of light as it's hybrid child, although there's a chance that it was grown in less bright conditions previously and wasn't given a chance to adapt.

Calvin, thanks for the pollen offer. My plant doesn't bloom until mid-winter and I am not sure it will last until then.

Okay no worries - I can store some at 4C if you're interested, just let me know :)

I've changed my mind about this plant - all it's flowers are now open and it smells amazing! Very similar to hyacinths. I'm going to shoot Jay an e-mail, because IOSPE lists this one as being fragrance-less.
