Magnolia Grandiflora
Comments (11)Flora, would that they would defoliate. I saw one in Massachusetts that would break a stone heart with pity. A defoliated tree is quite a bit more attractive that a freeze-burned M.grandiflora. The cold and the wind first bronzes the leaves, then desiccates them completely. Tattered brown leaves that put you to mind of an abandoned, defenestrated factory building. By mid-summer though, the transformation is complete and the tree shows no sign of the abuse of winter. That is in a cold Zone 6 climate. Shillanorth is in a 4, I too wonder how they do there. It likely wants to make a bush....See MoreMagnolia - Bracken Brown Beauty
Comments (2)rhizo Good points - the trees are planted on a slight slope and I was concerned that that they were planted too high and that the root ball might dry out. I could have overwatered them. We barely had any rain fall for 2 months. The twine was removed from the root ball. Thank you for responding. I have always wanted a magnolia and I am thrilled at now having 5 of them....See MoreThe Best and Worst of 2006

Comments (5)There are a lot of variables, including how many gallons of water per minute are delivered, so it's a wild guess on our part. But my gut reaction is that there's no shortage of water for these plants. I think your best advice is going to come from the landscaper who put them in. More than likely, they're going to lean toward extra water as that will not be as dangerous as too little water for unestablished plants....See Morecordes26
