When do your paw paws bloom?
Comments (4)I forget when mine actually bloom, but I think it's late March. I have 4 trees, one is a named variety that is 15 years old and has never bloomed. It is stunted for some reason and is only 3' tall. The other 3 are unnamed, they came from a local nursery and were started from cuttings. They are 8 years old and 15' tall. The older one is in full sun, the others are shaded by larger trees. I read that they need shade when they are young, so I planted them in a different spot. I haven't checked mine for buds yet, but as John said "Flower buds are dark and round". I have read that you need to hang some rotting meat near them to attract some sort of fly to pollinate them, I forget the name of the fly. I plan to try that this year. I have only had one fruit, I picked in on 07/22/2010. I remember because it was the day after my Dad died. We all sampled it and everyone liked it. There are a lot of posts for paw paw on the Fruit & Orchards forum here. I think that is where I read about the meat....See MoreWhen do you expect your first fully open blooms?
Comments (21)Ah, PTPulley..."HI"...waving vigorously! Actually, I am up on the top down near the south end, but I used to live at Ellisport, right across from you. Come over and see my dahlias when they are all blooming :-) How many do you grow? I have about 190 this year and sell the flowers at my flower stand. Thus enabling me to buy more and more interesting tubers each year Loved your hint on ripping stakes from cedar boards. We are going to try that ourselves. Right now I have a crazy collection of bamboo stakes, metal fence T posts, and bean poles and those green plastic covered metal ones that bend at teh wrong time. How I would like a nice patch with posts all the same size , and ones that won't rot in 2 or 3 years....See Morewhen do your dudleyas bloom
Comments (3)Sweet looking Dudlea David, very clean looking, I'm a big fan when it comes to plants that have hues of white I grow mine outside very warm hard full sun from Spring to lower temps at early- mid fall A few weeks ago I had asked about my Dudlea on a prior thread, had read and am led to think mine may flower sometime early Spring. Currently it's under lighting 12000 lums at 6500 K for 12 hours a day I've no buds here as of yet. Enjoy yours after reading this I would think flowering time would vary from one to anouther. Example from old world experiances I never expect them to flower regularly every year Tylecodons sometimes flower before dormacy or sometimes they flower while coming out of dormancy Year to year they do show growth but wont flower at all for more than one year...See Morewhen do your daffodils bloom?
Comments (27)I planted about 900 daffodil bulbs in one afternoon the day before thanksgiving right before the ground froze in 2011. I used an auger attachment with a battery operated craftsman drill. The craftsman died about 300 bulbs into it. Luckily there was a corded hammer drill available. The auger bit stripped after the next 200 bulbs. Luckily I always buy multiples so has another one It took about 5 hours to plant everything around the perimeter of the yard into the woods in Hingham. They bloomed beautifully the first year, I ordered from colorblends and most were double if not triple nosed. 100 bulbs for $39. The following year it wasn't as spectacular nor the last year. I found out that the gardeners that are hired just rip out everything that isn't a shrub at the end of may. Last year was the first year they were allowed to die back naturally so hopefully the will look better this spring....See Morehedgwytch
