Giant MoonFlower Vine....Giant Flower!!!! Pics
Comments (12)Well TLC is the best thing you can give. but whats worked for me is that mine is on my deck underneath the spreading limbs of a large oak tree so when 1 and 2pm in the afternoon rolls around it is shaded. i also fertilize it wirh miracle grow for roses every once and a while. i also gave it alot of support. it is growing on a tall tomato cage and also on the railing of the deck. it also has good air movement you know just the basics for every plant. do you have any shade? i mean there is most likely a large temp difference between nashville and NY. but i still have to water sometimes once in tha A.M and once in the P.M. we have had some pretty opressive heat as well. i hope this helps you both i really do. Have Fun!!!!!!!!!! ;) Samuel...See MoreYellow MoonFlower...
Comments (24)Hi The plant I have is also a dandelion-like yellow flower. You can get seeds from it and re-seed them in the spring or if you leave them the nut like seed under the leaves at the base of the stem (after each flower blooms) is filled with seeds and can be left to re-start in the spring. I always take a few of these nut like seeds and save them in case it doesn't come back in the spring. Sometimes, when they do start up in the spring they are easily mistaken as a dandelion and we gardeners tend to pull them out not realizing that they are our flowers. I have tons of them and love them ... they are cool!! I would however, love to know the name of them annette...See MoreMoonflower seeds from the dark side of the moon
Comments (13)Neptune, the datura in the pic is well worth growing. They're root-hardy in some parts of my garden here in Tennessee, and get bigger and better every year. OK, thanks, msbatt. You should be able to get Ipomoea alba seeds at your local Wal-Mart, about a dozen seeds for $2 or less. Oh, I didn't realize that Wal-Mart carries them. I've been ordering them online. Thanks for the info. And they're one of the world's easiest seeds to germinate, I think. I soak mine in hand-hot water overnight, then plant only the seeds that have swollen and cracked. I soak the un-swollen ones another night, and yet a third night if any are left. Anything that's not cracked by then I throw out. That's an interesting technique. Actually, I haven't really had much problem getting them to germinate. Here's the way I've been doing it lately. Like you, I soak the seeds. However, I do it in regular-temperature water for only 8 hours. Then I rinse, drain, and let them sit out for another 8 hours. Basically, I rinse and drain every 8 hours until they start sprouting. Right now, I have some on the counter with sprouts about 1/2 inch long. I'll probably plant those tonight. My problems have been a) transplanting moonflowers already in soil and b) getting them to bloom. I have never successfully transplanted one, so I've decided not to try it again. Last year, I did have quite a few to come up, and then they developed into nice vines, but just never flowered. I'm not quite sure why. Moon vine just doesn't do much until it gets HOT.) It does seem to enjoy the heat. Have you ever had your moonflowers not bloom?...See MoreThoughts on "Autumn Princess" azalea with "Blue Moon" phlox
Comments (4)I just planted stuff yesterday and it's raining today, so this isn't beautiful or anything! But I'm trying to envision how it'll grow in. Obviously the azalea is in the ground and the phlox isn't, so imagine them about a foot (0.3 meters) lower. The Creeping Jenny are cuttings from my main patch that I accidentally grabbed while transplanting some other plants. I'll be thinning that patch a lot next week, though, so I'll add in larger sections then. I also have allium (currently growing in pots) that I plan to add to this section. They're purple, with expected height of 16-20" (about 0.5m). The expected size of the azalea is 3' x 3' (about 1m x 1m) and it's about 1 1/2' right now, so at this placement the phlox would be underneath the edges of the azalea at full growth. I THINK it will look good, the leaves are similar in size and structure and I think that the colors are complementary. But I couldn't find any pics of this combination online, so it's hard to be sure. If you don't like the result just shift them. I've read that roots tend to extend as far out as the limbs, so I wasn't sure if this would be dangerous: digging up phlox and digging into the roots of the azalea....See Moresasha73
