Can you identify this tree from Louisiana?
Comments (14)For those who do not know what the history is: Quote: "Last fall (2006) in Jena, Louisiana, the day after two Black high school students sat beneath the "white tree" on their campus, nooses were hung from the tree. When the superintendent dismissed the nooses as a "prank," more Black students sat under the tree in protest. The District Attorney then came to the school accompanied by the town's police and demanded that the students end their protest, telling them, "I can be your best friend or your worst enemy... I can take away your lives with a stroke of my pen." A series of white-on-black incidents of violence followed, and the DA did nothing. But when a white student was beaten up in a schoolyard fight, the DA responded by charging six black students with attempted murder and conspiracy to commit murder."...See MoreBonne Terre Garden Fair, Houma, LA
Comments (6)Southdown Plantation is across Little Bayou Black from Hwy 311. It is on Museum Drive which you can catch on St Charles Ave on one end or Polk St on the other end. St Charles AVe and Polk St intersect with Hwy 311. Museum Drive is probably only a quarter mile long. People park in the Winn Dixie Parking lot on St Charles St and walk over. It is about a mile north of the Civic Center, if you know where that is. The Civic Center is at the intersection of Hwy 311 and Barrow St, and on the same side of the bayou as Southdown Plantation. Send me an email if you need directions from a specific address....See MoreTree ID-Central Louisiana
Comments (13)I was thinking M. virginiana, but seemed too obvious, so thought it must be something else. The second picture, with its semi-deciduous look, looks just like mine, so, it might be just that. If it is virginiana and has not flowered, they really are missing something delightful in fragrance. Its small flowers even more aromatic than M.grandiflora. It is much underutilized in the North where Saucers and Star Mags dominate. Apparently, there are northern and southern varieties of the same virginiana species. The northern ones are more deciduous, the southern ones more semi-evergreen. Comments (33)Great photos. We can identify some if you would like us to try. I see what I think is Francee and two I think are u. albomarginata. Others might be able to name others. If you want us to try that, start a new post with ID or NOID in the subject line. Give us a big photo of your hosta and only put two per post. (It gets confusing when there are more than two varieties in a post.) I, too, have had good luck with Hallson's. I also like Land of the Giants and Green Mountain. I've always heard great things about Naylor Creek. Here's a link to a thread we did a couple of years ago, entitled "where to buy hosta". Pay attention to the places that are recommended by more than two people. http://forums.gardenweb.com/discussions/1963531/where-to-buy-hosta?n=51 bk...See Moresoundgarden
