To Stop Squirrels from digging in your pots
Comments (6)Rhizo; Some of my squirrel problems my have been blown over by yesterdays's tornado many of the giant oaks in my neighborhood were blown over. The one in my backyard that would have blown over onto my house was not Sheerly by dumb luck. Two weeks ago Lowes had stepping stones on sale I bought 114 of them with no idea what I was going to do with them and when I stacked them around one side of the base of the old oak tree just to have them out of the way lucky for me it was on the side in the direction from which the storm came. The stepping stones weigh over 20+ lbs. each you do the math. I use a modified for the south / poorman's version of Al Tapla's 5-1-1 mix which is similar to your bonsai mix that I mix myself. What is the brand of potting medium that you are using I would love to find something good already mixed???? I agree watering is also an art to be mastered if one is to be successful in containers my problem is that I have added so many additional containers each year that it is starting to get out of hand and with the hotter and drier summers we have been having. It is my fault I never met a flower pot I didn't like I also will be getting alot more sun on my gardens this summer and I was just starting to really like Begonias and they seemed to like me. I guess roses my have to take their place. My tongue in cheek joke used to be if I ever wrote a gardening book it would be titled " Gardening in the shadow of a giant oak" LOL It has taken me 20+ years to figure out how to use the shade to my gardening advantage and how to deal with the root intrusion into my beds. In a matter of seconds four of them lay toppled like dominos. Family...See MoreWhat Will Keep Squirrels Out of My Potted Plants?
Comments (10)I use peppermint OIL. Squirrels are allergic to it, so they stay away from it. I just mix a few drops of "Essence of Peppermint Oil" with water in a sprayer, and I spray anything I don't want them around. It is very strong and can sting your eyes, so be careful. It also makes everything smell like peppermint, but I like that. The only negative is that you need to spray every couple of days. Try it. You can buy it on the internet....See Moresquirrels digging in pots
Comments (13)Ahh, squirrels. I live in an old 'hood thick with giant Pin Oaks and equally thick with squirrels. Individually cut 'lips' or strips of hardware cloth/mesh (if planting seedlings) that sit just inside the container work, or put plastic mesh or critter netting (if planting seeds). But I didn't want to go to that much trouble, so I dug up a bulk container of cayenne pepper powder at the dollar store and just sprinkled some on, and just inside, the lip of each pot, and that did the trick, they left the containers alone after a week or two. Squirrels also learned to avoid my suet feeders because I buy the kind laced with hot pepper (they destroyed the unlaced cakes I bought at first). Downside is that you have to re-sprinkle some powder after each rain, but for a couple of bucks and not much work, it saved my containers. Works well for newly planted individual perennials in a bed too, but the pepper trick will not really work for a large garden of veggie seedlings, that requires bird netting all 'round....See MoreWhat's digging in my ranunculus pots and how to stop it!
Comments (2)Looks like squirrel damage. I am very familiar with that :( I have found that Critter Ridder works well. It comes in granules and you can shake it on the top of the soil. Can be purchased at big box stores....See Morekatiebythegate
