filtration and feeding my koi
Comments (1)The filtration does help. The thing you have to realize is that what you put in the pond, stays in the pond. It just gets converted from food to fish waste and broken down over time, so even with the best filtration you can still pollute the water very quickly, causing an ammonia spike, PH crash, etc. if you're dumping loads of food in. Obviously with no filtration, you'd have to be even more careful about it. The filtration just helps the waste convert into less harmful substances more quickly. Without knowing your pond volume, your fish load, or how much you feed in one sitting, no one can really tell you if you can get away with feeding more. As long as you keep a close eye on your water parameters and be prepared to do a small water change or two (about 10 percent or so) if it DOES start to overload the system - I don't suppose you'd find out until you try it. Comments (5)Can you describe the symptoms? Hnladue, I worry about using the medicated food just before shut down because it reduces the good bacteria as well as the bad bacteria in the fishies gut and I haven't heard any thing about parasites which I would think should be addressed as a possibility. What do you think about using some winter active bacteria? I had planned to use it any way, but for other reasons. I would agree with the salt as a general tonic. As for the amount of salt, with a pond that size could she use the salt blocks for water softening? Otherwise, it could get a little pricey. I know you were around when David mentioned it. Can you help refresh my memory? The Melafix... would it stay active in the water beyond a treatment period so that she would have to do a water change? Sorry about the questions seemingly addressed just to you. I would appreciate info from anyone who is an old timer or who is familiar with the problems.
