Nasty worms/bugs hanging from my conifer trees in TN
Comments (2)They may be what are called "bag worms". I have had bag worms in my cedar tree/bush and they are "terrible ugly nasty" things. The worms live in their tough cocoons and are hard to kill. Depending on how bad the infestation is when you find it it can take several regular treatments to get rid of them. They seem to take advantage of trees that are distressed and they multiply quickly. They can show up every year if allowed to do so. Usually the tree will survive and return to looking good if you keep it treated and then give it some food and water...See MoreWhere should I put my hummingbird feeder(s)?
Comments (0)How Many Feeders and Where Should I Put Them? Put out as many feeders as you are willing and, most importantly, are able to maintain. (It is even better if you also garden for hummingbirds.) Having more feeders/plants may help lessen the competition amongst hummingbirds, especially if the feeders are hung out of sight from one another (and the gardens are well-spaced). You may want to check this by thinking like a hummingbird... You may not be able to see both feeders from inside your house, but a highly territorial hummingbird will find the perch outside that overlooks both! Experiment with feeder locations; once a hummingbird has discovered that a feeder is a reliable source of food, it will remember exactly where that feeder is. Go ahead and hang a feeder right up close to your house or even on a window. (Just be aware of the potential for window collisions on unprotected, reflective glass and with screened porches and other large screened-in structures.) Hummingbirds are rather fearless, and don't mind being observed close at hand if you don't make any sudden moves. Note: The sugar solution in feeders in full sun may spoil more rapidly than that which is in shaded feeders. Feeder and Feeding Facts ALG and GARDEN WEB. Comments (7)Nice video, tmc2009! I saw a juvenile male hummingbird here in SE coastal MA on October 21, 2016. He hung around my feeder until October 29, 2016 and I didn't see him again. I asked a well-known ornithologist about this and he gave me a lot of information on late-migrating ruby-throated hummingbirds. If you scroll down to the end of this link Hummingbird Spring Migration 2016 you can read a quote from him discussing the issue. Bottom line is that the hummer may be genetically programmed to migrate late (or could be injured) but may still be able to migrate safely when she decides to leave. Comments (6)Thanks for the advice, guys. I'm a complete newbie comes to hummingbirds and feeders. We didn't get them in NYC! Morz8, I think it would be wasteful to fill my feeder to the top, especially if the hummers don't know about it yet. I intend to plant some fuschias I already have in hanging pots near the feeder, plus I have some window boxes on the nearby railing to plant with the fuschia geraniums, purple petunias, and multi color portulaca I brought back from a fabulous nursery near Gettysburg, PA. I haven't planted them yet, they're sitting in their greenhouse pots on my wire shelving until I am really sure we won't have an overnight frost. If one suddenly came up, I could place my beautiful plants into a big Rubbermaid tote I have at the ready on the balcony. Accuweather, Weather.com, and the National Weather Service do not indicate any temps near freezing right up until Mother's Day, but I am erring on the side of caution. I am really looking forward to planting these gorgeous plants and hope they also attract hummers....See Moremtdarrah
