First-time pressure canner recommendations?
Comments (7)I got an older presto model used locally for a bit less than the newer 23 Qt model. Definitely get the weight set, drive the price up a little but trying to deal with the dial guage is not worth it anymore since most places that used to test them, don't anymore. I was one of those people searching for info about buying canners not too long ago. I was tempted to spend more money for the All American but am happy with the Presto. Both companies seem to be very good and parts are easily ordered. If you go with the 23 quart model you can also manage to use the canner for water bath canning (don't seal the lid.) The smaller pressure canners would likely not allow enough depth to cover jars with a couple inches of water and still allow for space to boil. I have now used my presto pressure canner as a water bath canner for making marmalade as well as a pressure canner for making chile con carne....See MorePressure Canner Over Pressure Vent
Comments (3)I just did this to my Magic Seal 16 qt model. This was a Wards model like the Sears Maid of Honor series, but they were all made by presto. I bought mine from pressure cooker outlet listed above. The part number of the outlet fitting is 1058. That replaces your older version and it screws in to the threaded hole in the lid. Easy does it as to much force will strip Aluminium threads. I used Teflon tape on mine, just like plumbing. I also bought the 3 pc weight set. I also found the outlet on ebay $9 shipped. My gripe with the PC outlet $9 shipping which made the total $30 for the outlet and weights. I still love the older machined PC's and these upgrades make them run like a new one. Hope this helps. Comments (76)Thanks for clarifying Linda Lou! That's what I did last night and it worked well. Only problem was, with Shirley's vegetable juice cocktail only 3 jars of 8 sealed. When I opened the lid, I noticed some were boiling in the jars, so I removed those last to avoid causing siphoning. Only later did I realize that they were boiling because they were sealed, and had lower pressure inside the jar and therefore a lower boiling point of water than the unsealed ones. I know all the things to check, and I will investigate the problem (the canning water was perfectly clear with just two tiny strands of tomato fiber that probably came from the outside of a jar). Not trying to hijack the thread toward seal failures or anything. Just puzzled...last time I made this recipe I had a high failure rate too. I will compare the sealed and unsealed for headspace, check for food in the failed seals, and recan today I guess. So much for not spending hours in the kitchen today. ;-) Thanks for the help. Comments (20)Melly, I'm remembering the conversation we had last season about that three-piece weight. I got mine nearly 30 years ago from Presto. At that time they specifically listed it in their canner manual as an accessory. It's intriguing that sometime later they quit recommending it, though as far as I know they've always offered the part, and now they're back saying it's OK again. Strangely enough, my All-American canner came with just that set-up, a gauge and a three-piece weight. They state specifically to go by the weight and that the gauge is just a visual reminder, nothing more. I've been fortunate. The Presto weight and the gauge have always been in sync, but if they weren't, like you I'd trust the weight since it's been machined for accuracy. I do like having the gauge, though.
