Bah's Nursery - south side of Griffin Road, just east of I-75. Jamaican Shirley is the owner. Very knowledgeable. She has a massive variety of plants, trees, and palms. Some specifics - at least 5 Jamaican Star Apples (Cainito) in 25-gallon and larger cans. Dozens of rare Crotons. All sorts of rare and hard-to-find palms. 8 different varieties of Mussaenda! She is very negotiable.

It sounds like a great place to go. Do they have small
plants in 3 gallon containers or smaller, I occasionally
go down to Fort Lauderdale and often go to the Living
Color nursery, and have also been to Jesse Durko's
nursery. If I stay on Griffin road from Fort Lauderdale,
do I go past 75 to get there? I like to push the limit
on the tropicalness here in Sarasota, and try to grow
many plants that are uncommon.

Divine, I know that you think it is not dense, but it is. And adding potting mix, which is basically just peat, will make this mix even more dense. It will compact and will eventually cause water to accumulate in the bottom half of your pot, suffocating (drowning) your roots. Trust me, been doing this for a while, now :-) Silica is correct, so am I, so are the other several very successful container citrus growers on this forum. I wouldn't bother mixing my custom potting mix this way, if I didn't need to. And, it is quite warm where I live (Vista, N. San Diego county, about 7 miles inland), with little to no rain, and I still need to do this to prevent root rot. If I could have it easy, and just dump a bag of potting mix into my pot, I would. But, this eventually spells disaster in compacted and collapsed mix, and the death of my precious citrus tree. Since I grow a lot of rarer cultivars in containers, I consider it cheap insurance. You're welcome to do what you want, and ignore the advice of experienced container growers (and Silica is being very modest, he has the most fantastic greenhouse, and grows some of the most amazing things in a very inhospitable climate). I wish you luck, but I expect in a while, you'll see issues, so you can save this thread for future use, when you see your tree starting to do poorly. It will manifest itself in appearing to be under-fertilizing, then drooping, dropping leaves and overall failure. Those will be your signs of root rot. That, and a very wet bottom half of the pot with very stinky rotten roots. Patty S.

Hey, I have been good. Look at that, last at Home Depot on April 24th and I only went back again today. Must be some sort of record for in the spring. I really needed something like a brick in a charcoal grey color to do the edge of a new garden bed in my sideyard. I found something they call pavers as they are brick shaped but not as thick as bricks but same dementions. I thought about it and decided that the fact it was not as high did not matter as the color was perfect. Its only to define the edge of the bed and keep the grass out so the height will do. So I bought a bunch of them. Have to go unload them from the car in a few minutes. Between Home Depot and the local nursery that I always stop at I bought a hanging basket, more impatients, $9.99 red Mandavella vine impuse buy at HD, 2 ferns for that new bed I started, flats of snapdragons to go in the upstairs garden, lantana (another impuse buy) and a flat of those bedding dahlias in reds and oranges. I need red verbena for the terraces garden but red seems to be really hard to find. Going to have to drive out to the nursery I got it from last year as I need a flat of zinnias too and thats the only place to get those two items. 45 minute drive but I hit two nurseries in the same road a very short distance from each other and then I drive alitle further and go to the pond place were they have water plants and vat after vat after vat of pond fish in every size, type and color. Got my fish there last year.

Hello All! On my way home tonite, I did indeed stop at K&K. Browsed around until I saw the man I recognized as the owner. He was curteous as always, asking if I needed any help and I just flat out asked him straight up if they were affiliated and were they closing! He chuckled, rolled his eyes and shook his head. He said several people had been by asking the same thing which he said he really appreciated. I spoke for our little group and told him there were several of us that shop there often as it's great on prices and selection, not to mention helpful staff. He told me if I could help get the word out, he'd appreciate it. He said one of their vendors even sent him an e-mail expressing his condolences! Can you imagine? Almost like reading your own obituary in the paper! ha! So folks, they're still there and very much still in business! (seedmama & boomer - aren't you relieved??? I am!) btw - they are having a good sale on end-of-the-season items like tomatoes & peppers, along with several things like Alberta Spruce. And no, I didn't buy anything....this time. But I've got my eye on this certain chiminea...=). Paula

New -- Need to save some great roses before I move

With all you've written, your safest bet is to know the identities of the roses and repurchase replacements once you've moved and are ready for them. The next safest choice would be to make good friends with someone there in Texas who would be able and willing to either root or bud them for you and hold the plants until they, and you, are ready. There is no method, period, which can be guaranteed to be successful the first time it's tried, particularly when added to a major move. You need to find someone who is already set up for propagation who can accept the appropriate material from you, propagate it and get the plants back to you when you're ready. Either a hobbyist or a nursery who either uses mist for rooting or buds would be your best alternatives. Might there be someone at the nursery from which you purchased them who could identify them for you so you can replace them later? If you open an account on either Photobucket or Flickr, you can post numerous photos in one post here. Otherwise, it's one photo per post, but at least seeing them in living color, perhaps someone might recognize them, making your job of replacing them easier. Good luck! Kim

Shirley has a telephone, but no website, and it may be a rotary dial phone. She has plants in everything from 6" pots to 45-gallon cans. Lots of orchids at great prices. I didn't notice any tree ferns, but the place is literally packed with plants.

That's practically my backyard too! I'm always on the lookout for great nurseries. There are so many of them here.
I can tell you one to avoid... Bloom's Nursery on Flamingo. We bought a house with a good sized yard with practically nothing planted in it. I try find good deals whenever I can. I saw a Groupon for Bloom's and purchased a few. Went there and tried to ask the workers a few questions but none spoke English. They kept pointing at the boss (I assume owner). I waited and waited while he helped this one woman. Finally, after about 15 min, I politely interrupted with a question about the Angelonia. He stated that he was helping someone with a large order and that I'd have to wait. I googled Angelonia and decided to purchase them. loaded up my cart with Podocarpus, Crossandra and about 10 Angelonia, all that was left. It is so hot here now and those big podocarpus are heavy. No one helps so I was sweating. Interrupted him again, wanting to pay and be on my way (apparently he's the only one who works the register). He huffed and rang me up. I took out my groupon, he looked at it and said, "I'm sorry this woman I've been working with wants the Angelonia. You'll have to put them back". Ummm what? But I just loaded everything up? Why didn't you put hers on the side? I am a sweaty cranky mess and let him know how his customer service sucks and left everything right there. He stated, right in front of the woman, "It's your world, we're just living in it." I'll leave the Groupon in my account as credit. He will not get my money.
Another great nursery I've found is Florida Nursery Mart on Griffin between Flamingo and Palm. I can't speak for their selection as I went in with specific fruit trees in mind, but the customer service was excellent. They help you all the way and give planting and care instructions. So far the Avocado, Lemon and Banana are doing great. Love the employees there. They are knowledgeable.
I still have some planting projects so I'll swing by Bah's for sure. Thanks for the recommendation.

and both Cyathea medullaris,C dealbata Black and silver tree ferns .
can't locate phone # for either nursery??

Okay Ricky, you caught my interest, lived here all my life and ignored them, suddenly I like them - go figure. If you don't want to post here can you send me an email from (My page)? I'd like to know more about the rarer crotons.

I went today first and last time. was planning on going back in 2 weeks, but will not after being lied to. I bought multiple plants, 4 Hoya n 1 ground orchid, or so

I thought. But to my surprise once I got home all the pots soil has tiny white bugs. BUT the worst was, I was lied to. 1 of my plants was sold to me as a HOYA plant. Paid full price and I like to put the names of my plants when I buy them. I googled and as I was taking a picture I notice flowers on it. So Now I was able 100% see what this plant is. And it's NOT a Hoya like I was told, it's a plant called lipstick which is NOT related at all to Hoya. She sold it says it was a Hoya, and all 5 plants had bugs on the soil!
