House Plant or Groundcover?
Comments (3)Looks like a strawberry begonia (Saxifraga stolonifera). Mine's a houseplant too, but all houseplants started as something found in the wild. It is native to China and hardy to zone 5. Personally, I would opt not to put it in my garden because of its non-native status....See MoreMost creative catalog descriptions
Comments (18)Yes, it is absolutely true, that on the positive, nonsarcastic side of creative, nothing can match the desciptions and stories in the Heronswood catalogs from the past. I too remember laughing out loud multiple times at the stories and plant descriptions ("Lysimachia numularia aurea, size 1.5" by 10 miles" comes to mind....). There was a lot of hype yes, but NOT directed to try to persuade you to buy a plant by misrepresenting its garden qualities. We will all miss Heronswood plants -- I think I probably ordered from them over 15 years. But the catalog descriptions and stories are equally things that I will miss. Others have tried to emulate this style, notably Tony Avent at PD, also the Arrowhead Alpines catalog. But nothing even comes close to the creativity and imagination of the old Heronswood catalogs. I once heard Lauren Springer, herself a wonderful writer and speaker, describe the Heronswood catalog as "selling garden dreams". And that was what it was -- but in an imaginative, informative way, that changed the face of American gardening. Too bad it's gone. Maybe we will still get sme good stories on Dan's web site. But I have saved all my old catalogs too. They are classics....See MoreHeronswood Catalog

Comments (25)there is again some activity: "In February,[2008] George Ball and the Burpee Company engaged a Tacoma, Washington, firm to appraise the Heronswood Garden, taking an important step toward PNHC's goal of acquiring the property. The appraisal has arrived, and the PNHC board is currently reviewing the document and the organization's resources." And for more info go to the link below. And regarding the previous comments ( IN THE THREAD ABOVE) about the plant descriptions -- there is the not so subtle (chuckle) comment in the middle of Dan Hinkley's recent Travelogue from Japan: "...where I once rambled in considerable contemplation, there is found a pathetic and pedestrian blend of plants that are not tended nor scrutinized but offered with descriptions that imply, laughingly, a vacuous absence of passion and knowledge or simply an organization too indolent or dimwitted to write descriptions of their own." http://www.danielhinkley.com/ Here is a link that might be useful: PNHC update...See Moredanita
