Is there any point to growing Bali/Evans cherry in NJ ?
Comments (4)I'm a fan of Evans so I'll point out a few differences I've noticed between Evans, Northstar, and Montmorency. For me, Northstar and Montmorency were smaller and Northstar has been very sour. Evans produces much more heavily and has larger fruit. It also seems much sweeter than the others, although that may be because I net the Evans as it isn't ripe until a couple weeks after it turns red and the others I pick as soon as they redden and try to beat the birds. Another trait of Evans is that it ripens several weeks after the others, extending the season unless you have disease pressures that would take the later bearing fruit....See MoreNanking and Evans cherry grafting question
Comments (13)Mind, I have only the one sample and it's only a few years old, so there's always the possibility of delayed rejection on these kinds of things. But right now I'm encouraged. I should have pointed out that a sucker from the same clone of prune plum was allowed to grow in the garden the same year that I grafted the prune, and it bloomed and set fruit for the first time this year. I'm hopeful that we'll see a bloom in the grafted prune next year. It's consistent with this particular clone to take its time bearing. One curious thing to point out: the rootstock is a gnarly, rough looking thing (as is the case with tomentosa) so the smooth, graceful plum stem above it seems anomalous. Tomentosa takes its time getting any size, and I think that's what's holding the prune down....See MoreEvans Cherry root stock
Comments (5)Thank you all! This is the 3rd. season after the graft onto Evans about 6 inches off the ground. It was a new sucker from the old tree near the trunk. The new shoot I bent down about 10 to 20 inch from the ground, you can weigh it down a bit more come winter and bring it up in the growing season. I haven't pruned it yet..we'll see what's doing next year, with good snow cover it should have a larger crop, this way I think it will be more predictable then heaving the tree grow up and expose it to the element of harsh winter. No hardy sweet cherries yet for zone 3 or colder, I'm still testing some from Europe....See MoreLots of Evans Cherry drop this year!
Comments (19)Yes, he invited me to give a talk to a horticultural society he was heavily involved in (lilies!) and was kind enough to offer to bring me to see his beautiful gardens and greenhouses, and showed me a freezer full of gorgeous red cherries. He told me they were his own hybrid and then proceeded to hand me a foot-long, twigless, leafless stick. He said, "Keep the roots wrapped in wet paper towel until you get it home," (I flew to Ontario a couple of days later!) "Stick it in the ground, water it a few times, and forget about it". I followed the directions and lo and behold, a few years later I had a 10 foot tall tree with gorgeous blooms, and a couple years after that - fruit! It's my favorite tree, and the cherries are divine. I hope I can bring it back to good health next spring!...See MoreKonrad___far_north
