can a fig be left overwinter in ontario
Comments (2)Hi Skindoc The only place I can think of over-wintering outside will be at the southern tip of Niagra Peninsula and around Windsor area but still requiring some protection. Depending on the variety, the roots may survive if the temperature does not go below -10C to -15C and may sprout again but the ability to crop and its ripening before the next frost depends upon the amount of total cumulative heat available over the growing period. Hardiness zones are more indicative of the coldness of the region and different areas with the same hardiness zone may not provide similar summer environment for croping and eventual ripening before frost. You may have to provide situation for warm micro-climate such as clear plastic enclosures with appropriate air circulation.....See MoreFig photos....
Comments (12)Its location for me too. I live in AZ and most of my fig trees were leafed out in January and the others came along by mid February. At this point I have been picking and eating 3-15 figs every day for the last 6-8 weeks. Once they start leafing out I mulch them with composted leaves and composted de-smelled steer manure and they just take off from there. In 2-3 more weeks the Breba crop will have been harvested. At that point I will mulch them again to try to jump start the Main crop. With a little luck I will have a nice Main crop harvest this year....See More12 mths to build 3000 Square Ft Home in South Western Ontario Canada?
Comments (9)Tear down August 2017. Had plans but permitting took until April of 2018. Slab construction so that saved a little time. Move in 1/7/19. Given the trades business and nearby hurricane damage it really wasn't bad. Call it 9 months post permit and about 9 months to get permit. We bought the land and started planning in May 2017. The trim crew took forever - that was the only real slowdown. 2 months for trim (and he is still finishing up). When trades were less busy, built a large basement house in 4 months from hole in the ground to CO. Permits took 2 weeks that time. 1 jurisdiction away - and both are relatively similar....See Morecan flat roofs in Ontario Canada.
Comments (12)Can a flat roof work and not leak in the Ontario climate-heat, frost, rain and wind? No snow, eh? Outside the GTA, snowloads would figure greatly in your calculations. For instance, average annual snowfalls at Pearson Airport TO are 42", in Sudbury, 103.7". Plus, winter temps outside the GTA mean very little if any melting. A friend owns a 1955 Don Mills, Toronto bungalow with a built-up flat roof. She bought it in '87 and replaced the original roof in 1994 with a single-layer membrane. Done right, flat roofs cost a lot more than standard shingle roofs, but can last longer. Perfect match: Flat roofs and sunny days. I'm planning a flat roof two-storey that would fit in just as well in Florida or sunny southern California. But it's mainly for the Bordens, baby!...See MoreMEL7300
