Do you ever go to Restaurant Supply stores? What do you buy?
Comments (35)My favorite restaurant supply store find is my measuring scoops. I gave a set to Diana in the my favorite things swap - you can see a picture on that thread. Restaurant supply stores are good for getting substantial stainless steel measuring cups and spoons instead of the wimpy aluminum ones that bend or dent. Or the big thin spatulas that can be used for tasks like lifting a layer of cake after you have split it horizontally to add fillings. In addition to what others have mentioned, they often have the cake pans with straight sides instead of sloped which is nice when making layer cakes. Around here there are two kinds - the ones that sell mainly food with a bit of equipment and the ones that sell mainly equipment - everything from utensils to major appliances. Smart and Final and Cash and Carry are the food kind - they are under the same ownership but Cash and Carry is bigger with more specialized food. For example, our Smart and Final has a few kinds of Torani syrup but the Cash and Carry has the full line plus some other lines of flavoring syrups. The equipment ones aren't all equal either. The area that has Cash and Carry has about 3 of the non-food restaurant supply stores. One carries nicer more varied stuff than the other two. But all have at least the basics like the stainless steel sheet pans, good cooling racks and lots of utensils. All the ones around here are open to the public. You don't have to be a restaurant or have a tax ID. Here is a link that might be useful: Link to thread with picture of the scoops...See MoreWhat do you do with all the paper?
Comments (8)Kgsd- I hear you on paper! That too was my nemesis. I still have a way to go but some ideas are below that may work or could be modified to help you. 1. Coupons I started being super selective about what I keep (like TallySue - BBand Bwyons are the main ones I keep) Here's what I do. I open the mail at the door after home from work. I toss the things I don't want into recycling (I have a trass can right at my entry way hidden behind a chest). Those with coupons I take the page or coupon at that time - pop it into my coupon organizer in my purse and I'm done. 2. Birth invitations, letters I've received, etc. Here's what I started doing with birth invitations and holiday cards and thank you notes. I have a hole punch (mine has a heart because I'm a dork but anyone can do). I put a little hole punch in them and add them to a clip like you use for paint samples. I store them all bound together in a decorative bowl on my coffee table that also houses a few reading materials so I can refer back to them. At the end of the year or when the ring is full I stick them in a photo album (just affix the little ring right around the rings of the photo album). 3. Flyers, ads, brochures, etc. Ads I throw away or go into my coupon thingy - brochures go into an idea album if they are worth it. For to do items to do I have a folder that sits in a my basket in my kitchen. Every night I pick out an item to take care of while I watch Oprah (dorky I know) But it forces me to cross one thing off and move to the next. Other important papers: Anyone heard of life.doc? I got mine at Barnes and Nobles it is for your important docs. I took and set mine up for the important things (will, medical info etc). But I also modified it a bit. You can use the CD for a template that prints out onto the sheets. I jsut took and made sheets for other important things and then printed them out in the same format. I store this in an extra kitchen drawer with our phonebooks. Maybe something modified like this would work for you? www.life.doc I hope maybe some of these ideas work! Comments (5)put 'em in one of those "portfolios" made out of cardstock that you can buy at the art-supply store. They're made in other materials too And stick 'em back behind the furniture, LOL! Comments (31)For the powder room on the main level and the guest bathroom upstairs, there are vanities w/doors, so they're in there, within reach (I'd hope that that's where a guest would look!). For my master bath, I also have a vanity, so I installed a plastic paper towel holder on the inside of the door closest to the toilet. It will hold 2 extra rolls, and they are out of sight but easily reachable, because I can open the door while sitting. I have seen the tall clear glass vases filled with TP rolls, but that's too fragile for me. A similar look -- go to a pottery place (garden center) or HomeGoods-type place and try to find a tall clay/glazed pottery vase to put them in. That way they're close by the toilet but you don't see "TP" as soon as you enter the room. ------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------- To AJSMama: How about a recessed drawer that tips OUT? Like the little drawers in front of the kitchen sink that tip out and hold sponges? Or kind of like an old-fashioned hamper/laundry chute....See MoreDorie_in_Alabama
