Please help me create a privacy hedge!
Comments (8)I would place the palms elsewhere. Also recommend you have the flower stalks trimmed off every year right after bloom because the ripened fruit makes a stinking g-dawful mess. I think you would be far better off putting a fabric screening material that is used on greenhouses or a window film on part of your glass roofing to create a privacy screen rather than using plants. You don't have a lot of room there and maintenance will always be an issue. Bamboo is inherently messy and is not "low maintenance"....See MoreHelp: Your ideal bev/bar layout if small area? Comments (5)HI xedos, thanks for your reply here too - as I've apologized elsewhere, I've completely stopped getting notifications from GW so I didn't think I had any replies (sadly.) So, I've ruled out the big GE Monogram unit. Just not worth the money for the life we lead - entertaining is one thing but that's about quick consumption of decent-priced beverages, not storing in a showcase. :-) I did go back to the combo unit but my husband was not thrilled with the temperature that would remain for her beer. He is a bottled beer guy, boutique brands, and they should really be at 35 or 36. I think we'll go with the bev center in the island to solve this - and then he has his own place to go and can feel territorial. So, that sticks me back with a wine cooler (single or dual zone) and an ice maker. Or that u-line pair, I suppose. I'm leaning towards the Dual Zone Marvel - a little afraid it's loud? But, then I've got all the wine in there and don't have to think about it. I'd love to have the can/beverage storage in that wet bar area too but as you said, somethings gotta give. Maybe it will move people out of the wet bar and into the next room (the kitchen, of course!) Thinking of the Manitowoc ice machine - also terrified that it is crazy loud but all ice machines make noise...? Oh, last thing, while it is "new" construction because we gutted the old kitchen in our 1917 colonial, that ONE window in the wet bar is here to stay. It's not ideal, although I do like the idea of having natural light in that space. I was thinking of actually getting more of a decorative type of window to dress it up a little. Thanks for the tip on the Kohler trough sink. I wasn't exactly sure how people use those? Need to investigate there. "Lighting guy" and I discussed all the lighting - practical and then the "drama" - :-) THANKS for replying - I really appreciate it. I have so many decisions to make and it's difficult to make them on my own. There are either too many resources or not enough. And, my husband has a "I care deeply but have no preference," attitude which seems great but leaves me solo to make all the decisions. :)...See MoreStruggling to find ideal length for prep area in my galley
Comments (25)To your original query, if 48" is your ideal prep space, then make the counter between the sink and range 48" (and just get used to stacking dirty dishes to the left of the sink). I personally would prefer 60" for my prep counter, but I'm likely taller/longer-armed than you are, and you should go with what feels most comfortable for you. The only caveat I can think of is, if your current prep space is teeny, then 48" probably feels enormous and like all the space you could ever want or need by comparison. For sure, it won't continue to feel so enormous once you are used to 48". If you install it, 48" will eventually feel normal and standard to you. I can guarantee that. The trick is, I've seen a lot of people get used to a larger space like that and then want even more space. For example, people used to eight foot ceilings think ten footers feel enormous and cold, but they enjoy nine foot ceilings and rave about how spacious and airy they feel and buy a house with those. Then they get used to nine. Nine is their new standard, eight footers now feel super low and cramped, and they start considering ten footers for their next house because those now feel nice and spacious and airy by comparison to the new standard. It's not always the case that you will eventually want more, but that kind of of pattern is very common to see in home spatial decisions. Aisle widths, door widths, counter lengths, etc. If you think that might happen to you, maybe go a touch longer than feels perfect to you now -- 54" perhaps?...See MoreMassive backyard remodel ... Comments (88)I grow lots of fruit trees here. Fruit trees go good with roses as long as the trees dont get too big and shade the roses out too much. I just planted Mermaid rose yesterday several feet from a shrubby LSU purple fig. The LSU Purple figs dont get too dense of a canopy. I also grow: Starfruit, figs, dwarf black mulberry, Longan, lots of citrus (several lemon varieties, 2 Buddah's Hand, 4 Red Fingerlimes, Blood Orange, Ray Ruby grapefruit, Thai Lime, Persian lime), Hass avocado, Then I have a Miracle fruit and 15 little Jackfruit seedlings that are a few feet high lol. Also have dragonfruit and some diff types of berries, grapes. Probably more that Im forgetting about right now lol....See MoreFariesAngel
