How to clean rock garden/mulch?
Comments (5)Hi all: I made an executive decision over the weekend regarding the rock areas and hopefully it is going to work out - I am tearing out the landscape fabric under the rocks so that nature can do the job she does so well, break down debris. The landscape fabric has not detered the weeds from growing right through, and literally tearing holes by some of the bigger weeds. We have so many ants of different kinds here that make nests and collect seeds from the desert floor. Until the first rains hit there is no guessing where the weeds may be concentrated. The point though, the landscape fabric is not functioning as it is supposed to, so away with it! I am putting down preemergent in the rock areas, along with ant repellant and I think I will have a fine rock area. The plants may even do better as the ground may dry a bit and I should not have the issue of plants rotting from too damp earth. I think that this has been a learning experience as you said Krensgarden. So I will live with this for the growing season and fall and then make a judgement. A note of caution to gardeners who may be putting together a rock area that also is subject to garden debris blowing around it, don't put down landscape fabric!...See MoreRock dust in 50 lb pails, how much do I need, Mr. Brown ?
Comments (18)doesn't it seem like a significant brix difference would indicate a soil difference? Maybe. Or it can mean that you've got a localized infestation of nematodes left over in one spot from last year's crop or even weeds. (and only the root knot can be spotted without lab testing and sometimes, not even them) If you've got sting nematodes or one of the other plant pathogenic species, you may not know and they can all infest fields in patches. Or it can be due to differences in drainage characteristics, which can vary depending on things like foot and vehicle traffic, even assuming that the soil type is perfectly uniform. Or microclimates may affect plant development. Like if you've got a prevailing wind from the north and the north row takes the the brunt of cold breezes and sustains some cold damage while protecting the south row, resulting in decreased ability to photosynthesize and produce sugars. or.... I suppose it's better than nothing but if the primary purpose is to evaluate soil fertility, I would be very hesitant to draw any conclusions, even tentative ones, based on something that doesn't measure soil fertility. As far as having time to test the soil, you just have to grab a little dirt on the same day that you're planting and send it in. That would give you a good a good base line. A couple more samples down the road and you just might have something. The cost can be an issue but a lot of labs can give you some numbers for pretty cheap. You would just want to make sure you're choosing the right methods for your soil. (I can help you determine the correct methods if you like)...See MoreHow do I create a rock garden?
Comments (7)I am not an expert but this is what I've done; I have a rock Garden in a very small area with not enough sun to plant anything, well maby moss! Where I started was by digging up the patch of grass, the moss and mounds of dirt. I then leveled the ground, put landscaping fabrick, then 1"washed rock as my main landcape. I put a walk way From the gate to the door steps with Edmonton brown stons that are naturally 1/4" brown and round. To traverse this walk way I placed really large(100-150lb) flagstones. I added a spot for an above ground moveable fire pit. The resting spot is approximatly 4.5' in diameter, and consists of 1.1/4" Granulite/popcorn rock(burnt clay). When the fire place is not there(Canadian Winters) I have a 5' low rise table which is nice to sit and converse around of course the center piece is a couple of small flagstones and dark laquered driftwood. Because of the lack of sun I used large exposed aggregate concrete planters to tie in the atmosphere. in those I planted Herbs and spices which really flourished. There are piles strategicly placed of old pitted rock, orange, purple and brown, everything natural and beautiful. I hope this description of my garden may be of use to you in creating yours....See MoreLG Electric oven has no self clean option - so how do I clean it?
Comments (18)I bought one of these by mistake, not getting information from the Home Depot representative when I asked what, if anything, was different about this model from another that would be available. Since I have NEVER owned an oven that is not self-clean, I assumed that "Easy Clean" was just a gimmicky euphemism for "Self Clean!" Yes, I was at fault for not investigating further, but for me it would be like asking if a car was equipped with wiper blades! I am so upset by this, but glad to hear of some possible solutions to the situation, as I find the so called "Easy Clean" by LG totally useless!...See Morepontyrogof
