Loquat trees- zones?
Comments (2)They are probably only hardy to zone 7. I have one planted on the side of the house that always manages to survive the winter, looks pretty good now, but doubt I'll get fruit--it might not be getting enough sun. It will survive a zone 6b climate in a protected area but with some dieback. They are easy from seed and also easy as containerized plants as long as you keep them on the COOL side over winter (under about 60F.)...See MoreAnyone tried Delosperma cooperi Coopers Ice Plant in zone 5a?
Comments (12)After being told these wouldn't live indoors, I tried some cuttings. I put them under an aquarium light. They all rooted and have been blooming off and on all winter. They are now trailing out of the pot. I think those who can't over-winter them could easily grow them indoors. People use simple aquarium lights for growing all sorts of plants indoors. Every cutting I tried rooted and grew well indoors. I'm pretty sure they would grow in a bright window without the extra lighting....See MoreAnyone Tried a Pindo Palm in Zone 7 with success?
Comments (37)Hi Island Breeze: That was a good analysis of zones. I personally belive MI to be generally 5b - 6b depending on location. I was probably quoting someone from MI if I ever said it was a zone 7 by the lakeshore. Clearly, outside of a rare microclimate MI is 6. Any part of MI that anyone said was a zone 7 along the lake, would be a low 7 at best and still require extra palm protection for a zone 6 for the rare nights that make record cold dips. Last year New York City had a low of 6* and that made that winter a 7b. However, our cold is prolonged compared to a more naturally southern 7b that breaks the cold snap must faster. Below normal temp winter outbrakes differ per location: southern outbrakes have "cold snaps 3 days or less " and us northerners have "cold spells-5, 10 even 15 days or more". Therefore zone 7b isn't 100% the same. Usually we are a 7, but have had many winters where I saw we were a 8 and one exception when we were 6b. Our northern winds are palm killers, so if we can just protect palms from wind and moisture freezing in the bud we can do well. Hope that clarified my viewpoint....See Moreanyone ever grow a papaya tree outside in zone 6-7?
Comments (3)I am curious what you decided to do with this papaya tree this winter. Keep me posted so I can learn. I want to try again next year if yours survived and let me know what you've done. Mine is all frozen b.c I left the outside in zone 5....See Moretelly2
