Craftsman lawn tractor stops when clutch or blades engaged
Comments (6)Not the seat safety switch, seems to work fine. I was thinking perhaps it might be the ignition switch. When attempting to get it to work properly, I stopped and restarted it a couple of times. One time the electric starter kept running even with turning the ignition switch off, until I turned it on and off several times. Comments (9)Well....tractor starts fine now, so today I decided to cut the grass. Not! When I put the "blade-lever" into the "engage" position...the blades did not engage. Total silence. There is still good tension on lever when moving up to engage the blades, so spring is still connected, There was a lot of built up dirt/grass on deck. Thought maybe it was keeping the idler-pulley from moving to tighten belt, but that made no difference. The belt does not seem to tighten when lever is engaged with motor off. Does motor need to be running to tighten belt? Couple more things worth noting: 1-when it was working, it would squeal when first engaging the blades, but I just thought that it was just some initial slipping of the belt 'til fully engaged. Maybe not. 2-Blades turn, somewhat harder when lever is not in the "engaged" position, very freely when in "engaged" position. 3-Belt is not tight in either position. Anybody help with this issue? I will scan other entries to see if someone else has had same issue while waiting. Thanks for your help and time....See MoreCraftsman Mower deck (clutch) Won't engage
Comments (68)Hi All, Thanks for all the tips; you actually helped me solve my issue (the clutch did not engage). Two years ago, I decided to buy a “Portable Car Battery Charger” instead of keep buying new battery every winter, which apparently was the root-cause. I used the “Portable Car Battery Charger” to jump-start the tractor then disconnected it and start plowing but this year the clutch did not engage. Apparently, the clutch need some power from the battery and since my battery is dead it simple didn’t engage. So, as a "temporary solution" I ducted tape the “Portable Car Battery Charger” to the tractor hood and I keep it connected after the initial “jump-start” and the clutch (and me) are happy. Next week, I will get a new battery for the tractor and a “Battery Buddy” to keep the battery alive during the summers. Hopefully, this post will save others some time & $$...See MoreCraftsman Lawn Tractor Won't Start
Comments (65)Seat switch connector has a built in "shorting bar" which will close the kill circuit when the connector is unplugged from the switch. Unplugging the connector from the switch gives the same results as if the seat is not occupied. Seat switch is just one switch in the safety interlock circuitry that can cause the engine to have no spark. The brake pedal interlock switch is actually 2 switches in one assembly. One of the brake switches is dedicated to starter inhibition, and the other switch is to kill spark and stop the engine. The PTO switch also has a circuit dedicated to the kill wire. You can disconnect the kill wire from the magneto to see if that restores spark. If doing that restores spark, something is grounding the kill wire somewhere. Could be a chafed wire....See Morejabbers
