MTD Engine to Transmission Belt Replacement
Comments (15)Hi: I'm a bit late, here but I wanted to comment on this. I have a Yardman mower which I think is made by MTD. Anyway, I have the 17 hp Briggs engine with a 42 inch mower deck. The unit is about 6 or 7 years old and I just broke the drive belt for the first time. And, just like you, I found the pulley right below the engine is frozen tight on the engine shaft. I drilled out the key and used PB Blaster and penetrating oil but that didn't help. I finally had to resort to using a heavy duty reciprocating saw with a metal cutting blade to saw thru the pulley, vertically. Of course, this destroyed the pulley. But it finally did come off the shaft. I have a new pulley supposedly being sent by UPS. Curiously, unlike what the instructions in the owner's manual said, I did NOT find a washer separating the pulley from the PTO clutch when I removed the clutch. I DID order a washer from the supplier along with the new pulley and slot key....See MoreMTD shift-on-the-go transmission reliability ?
Comments (4)This design has been around for many years. Between the engine and rear axle is a pulley assy with two belts. The center of the pulley moves between the two belts - changing the diameter of the pulley. This assembly hold up well even with a lot of service. Belts are difficult to change. The rear axle is a fixed gear ratio with forward and reverse. If the tractor is tasked with towing, the rear gear frequently fails. Sometimes the aluminum case cracks. The sheetmetal front axle beam is also a weak area. The MTD garden tractor that used this design worked ok. The smaller models are light duty and in my experience - wear out quicker than tractors from other manufacturers....See Moretransmission problem MTD tiller
Comments (5)I have an MTD rear tine roto-tiller and had an issue with my tines disengaging with the slightest bit of resistance. I pulled the transmission gear box assembly apart and found that one gear, shown in the attached photo, and indicated with an arrow had a key slot that was badly worn. This was allowing the tines to disengage. I took it apart and flipped the gear over as the other side of the gear keyway was fine. I put everything back together as shown in the photo and it runs fine now. I...See MoreMTD Tansaxel
Comments (4)Thanks Dynamike59. Despite MTDs original indication that they have no tech service manual (only owners manual) they did fax several pages out of a service manual which appears to have clearance specs for the drive shaft. VERY poor fax copies but I may be able to make out some details. I plan to open it back up this weekend. MTD was effectively closed today for a "Company Wide Meeting" but I have asked for a pdf of the manual. I may try some local dealers / service centers. I have replaced all of the belts and idler pulleys at their reccomendation based on their assessment "We don't believe it's the transmission and we think it is a belt or pulley problem". No one has mentioned that they have discontinued 618-0307C and replaced it with 918-0551A. Call me disappointed. It sounds as if you have been into these units before and I appreciate the advice....See Moredanny_2010
