My New Greenhouse -- Warning, LOTS of Photos
Comments (10)Thanks for all the nice comments, guys. This greenhouse was a long time coming, and I'm thrilled to finally have it up and running. The floor is gravel right now, BTW. I may put something like pavers on top of it later ... and I might not. Craig's List has sites in Atlanta, Athens, Auburn, Brunswick, Columbus, etc., in Georgia. Pick one or two sites that are closest to you, and I bet you'll find users near by who are posting items that you can use. None of the materials I collected were right here in Fredericksburg. I have driven as far as 3 hours to get an item that I wanted -- the antique store doors that I'll use on my workshop building, for example. Most of the action on CL in my area is toward DC and Maryland .. which can be as far as 2 hours away (the skylights were in eastern Md.) I know it's still early in the season, but things are humming along fairly well. The only glitch so far was when the temps got down into the teens on Monday night -- my water line froze solid .. even with the heat tape on it. Fortunately roses can take the cold, so no harm was done ... except for a broken hose fitting. Now I have to make time to get DH out there with me so we can install the pool cover on the beams over head, to lower the ceiling and keep in a little more heat. I can see that hanging out here will help with my winter blues. I love seeing what everyone else is doing in their greenhouses, while everything outside is frozen. Comments (44)Following up on some greenhouse questions- Westgirl - I did design it myself, I wouldn't call it easy but, you can certainly do it yourself. One recommendation - if you do build your own start in spring, this way you have a lot of time to work out the kinks. My watering setup is a simple timed based automatic irrigation system, normally off until the summer, When they need watering every other day. In the winter I just water by hand as needed. Mike - The frame is 2'' PVC. its strong and flexes a little, its available and not that expensive if you mess up a cut. The plastic is called greenhouse film, 6mil bought from a greenhouse supply store online. Heating is electric with a backup gas heater, just in case. Mksmith - Dimentions are roughly 30ft long 12ft deep and about 9ft at the tallest spot in the center, its a decent size. Heating is a challenge sometimes. Like I mentioned above, Heating is electric with a backup gas heater, just in case. The good thing as its fairly well insulated but, last night when it dropped to 16F it struggled to keep it above 40F, but it did :)...See MoreLyman Estate Greenhouses (Photos)
Comments (10)Thanks everyone for looking at my photos! I had never heard of these greenhouses until I read a notice advertizing the camellias in bloom this time of year. Chazparas isn't the plant shop great! I was impressed with the prices and selection they had and the lady working there is quite knowledgeable. Also the fact that some of the plants offered for sale are taken from cuttings of plants in the greenhouse is kind of neat. So there are couple of sales in the spring that I am definitely going to check out (Herb, Orchid and Heirloom plant sale). Sue Here is some info the upcoming Orchid sale: Spring Orchid Sale When: Friday through Sunday, March 23 - 25, 2007, 9:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Where: Lyman Estate Greenhouses, Waltham, Mass. Phone: 781-891-4882, ext. 244 Admission: free The orchid sale at Historic New England's Lyman Estate greenhouses features hundreds of budded and blooming orchids. Fascination with orchids began in the late 1700s and early 1800s. These brilliant beauties continue to encourage an enthusiastic following as their culture has become less demanding. No longer is a greenhouse required as this most adaptable species can be grown in a variety of home conditions. Their long lasting and showy blooms make orchids a dramatic addition to any indoor display...See MoreSome greenhouse peppers have no flowers!
Comments (18)@woohooman on your question on why I use a greenhouse. I didn't use to until last year when a rabbit (?) took out all my plants on one weekend in July... Bit every top off and left two inches stems for about 75 plants. After babying the seedling since March, that hurts. We're in the city so building an elaborate fence is not simple, so this seemed easier. Also protects from hail, which we do we get in bursts (and often when I'm at the cottage!!). And of course, our season here is relatively short, so I was able to start the plants outside earlier and get most fruits to mature before the nights get too cold. I use an automatic watering system because we leave for large parts of the summer, so the lack of natural rain is not an issue. So it seems the likely culprit here is the lack of air circulation, which can affect some types more than others. I presume it's too late to address now that the plants are so large? Or could they start flowering this late?...See MoreMarisha
