16.5 hp Briggs & Stratton partial turnover

I have a 16.5HP Briggs & Stratton "OHV" engine that turns over about one roatation, then stops. If I hand turn it past what appears to be the compression stage (1/2 turn maybe) I can get it to turn over again. After several to a dozen of these tricks, the engine will finally start and run just fine. I must admit to having replaced the oil, sparkplug, battery and starter (all in the last month) before reading that this could possibly be a problem with the compression release. The 16.5 hp "OHV" engine is of the following:

Any documantation on where and how to go next would greatly be appreciated !

Check wwhere the battery ground cable (black one) attaches to the frame, for rust and corrosion there. This does cause a slow crank condition. Also, try loosening the spark plug by a turn or so, and try it. If it cranks well, its probably the compression release

Check your valve clearances. Excessive exhaust valve clearance defeats the compression release resulting in hard cranking. Clearances are set with piston approximately 1/4 turn past TDC on the power stroke, and each valve should be set .004 to .006.

for most people its valve adjust but for a select few its the engine design itself. the piston gets lubed by the engine splashing oil. if you dont change the oil yearly and are not using the correct weight oil, the top side of the piston and occasionally the head also will create tollerances so tight even the compression release wont be enough for the starter to push thru. usually i sugesst pulling the engine apart and cleaning the piston, valves, rings, and valve head. get then super clean abd put it back together. keep up on the maintence and it should run fine. also check the seloniod, they do go bad and it takes all that CCA to get these engines spinning

"All of the above". Plus, install an inline fuel shutoff valve and turn the valve to the off position every time you stop the engine. Leave the valve in the off position for storing, or if you are just taking a break. Follow this rule: Engine OFF, Valve Off! This way you may never have to post, "My Briggs threw a rod. What do I do now?" And, always check the lube oil every time BEFORE using the machine.

Good used flywheel for these should be a dime a dozen. Any 28 or 31 series flywheel will fit that, count the number of magnets and check the size of them to get correct number for your stator. Also check material the ring gear is made from, aluminum, plastic, steel, match your old one. These engine "grenade" all time for other reasons so any small shop that works on mowers probably will have several. Large shops do not want to bother with them. I need some help if any on here would mind. My Husvarna riding mower 48 inch yth2348 with a intel v-twin 23hp briggs model#445577 type 0755E1 motor . It started acting like it wanted to die going up hill about 2 years ago but it ran fine after it was on level ground or going down hill. a couple days ago it finally cut off on me and could not get it running. I checked around the fuel pump and i noticed the vacuum hose going from the fuel pump to the valve cover was split. I took the valve cover off and tried to crank it and when i did i noticed a stream of oil shooting out as it turned over.. Didn't think much of that so put the cover back on and I replaced the hose and it started but started smoking really bad and doesn't seem to have very much power. This is the first time it has ever smoked any and now it has a miss in it as well. This all happened all of a sudden on the smoking. I also noticed when i got it back running that oil is seeping out of the fuel pump , i would think that is from the stream of oil i seen when i took the cover off is going up in the vacumn hose now that the cover is back on. Can anyone tell me what would cause these issues on this motor. everything that could possibly be wrong and order to check them first.

I had that problem with a 14.5hp ohv briggs i got 'refurbished' from a tractor sales- after many attempts to start it, and tearing it down, i noticed the flywheel key sheared- replacing it, it coughs and dies, It sheared again.
I took it back, they sed oil was in the combustion chamber and caused the key to shear- me, i think it was some other issue when it was refurbished, since i had made sure nothing was in the combustion chamber when starting. It could be nearly anything causing the problem. Since its an '02, its still reletively new- Ive had motors sitting in weeds, full of water, i clean it up and it fires right off like new. It could be a low CCA ( cold cranking amp ) battery- i get at least 300 plus CCA batteries to make sure it has enough power to crank it.

i have the same thing with 17hp/313700/eng.sparkplug out turns find,put it back in and it wont turn past the comp.stroke.did valves settings too.cant find anybody to get info to tare down for camshaft. thanks davie1973@bellsouth.net

I have instructions for adjusting your valves AND on how to check to see if the compression release is working. These engines have a history of soft camshaft lobes wearing down and occasionally the compression release its' self failing.

I have this same problem with a 1998 mtd/yard machines lawn tractor, B&S 16.5hp twin II, engine model # 42A707 Type 2238E1 Code 9801305B. I just ordered a repair manual from the B&S site. Does anyone know if the valve adjustment instructions are in the manual? Also if I pull the heads off will I need new gaskets?

Over head valves need to be adjusted in order for the compression release to work. Adjust the valves on their stroke to 5 thousands on a feeler gauge. I have had this problem and the adjustment worked. You can check U-tube to see how to do it.
