Snapper history question

I was in the Sanford History Museum in Sanford, FL, yesterday and saw an old lawnmower. The placard next to it claimed that Alexander Smith, owner of Smitty's Snappin Turtle mower shop, invented one of the first self-propelled power mowers and then sold the patent to a company in McDonough, GA, which made the mower famous. This would have been in the 1940s or maybe early 1950s. A quick internet search shows that a Smitty's Snappin Turtle is still in business in Sanford, FL.

It really doesn't matter if the story is accurate in the grand scheme of things, but I wonder if anyone has heard this before. I did not find a confirmation after a quick internet search.
