Paint Design Dilemma

Help soften stark white stucco exterior without complete repaint

Hello. We recently purchased a home in New Mexico with incredible views and spacious interiors. It has newer white stucco that doesn’t blend with high desert neighborhood and appears boxy and stark. Planting and changing door and deck rail color (can’t change cool-toned decking). Will install new light fixtures. Without completely repainting in pale, warm neutral, any suggestions appreciated. Would a shade warmer on accent wall be weird? And garage door ideas? Thank you!

The white in the house itself is fine.
The red door is inappropriate. And I’d change out the garage door as well.
The white railing is the biggest issue for me. I think once you change it (black) it’ll be ten times better.

Sarah -- hehehe Paint Chips -- turns out the potential partner gives lip service to being interested but has failed to return calls or answer emails. Methinks she's too young and/or not in a position to take it seriously. I don't think I'm qualified to teach faux finishing, truly. If I teach anything it should be dog training and parrot training. Decorpas -- Yes... Squirrel should be making lotsa' money for her obvious talents. I know the painter wants to do the whole house, but I'm thinking I'll just have him do the trim because money is tight. That will leave me the option to do the doors or not, at my leisure. I still keep looking at CL for a better front door. My measurements are strange on the existing one.

Okay because I tried a different look that is bolder but I personally prefer the one above. To me this new mockup just looks choppy in a different direction. My goal with the first mockup above was to get rid of some of the up and down confusion . In this new rendering I put a modern awning over the window closest to the garage. Maybe if I would have done the wood vertical on this I would like it more. On the first one I preferred the painted wood horizontal. Anyway, I'll post it for a "what not to do".

Thats a beautiful specimen of post war MCM ... what exact genre, I cant really say as thats not my era of expertise. Before you do ANYTHING, even paint, please learn what you have there - talk to your local historical societies, people who know, read up on the subject. Youre just gathering info now Even before deciding color, you will need to research the best product for your masonry - Im guessing its still the old fashioned cement based stucco. In general you will need something breathable . Usual acrylic housepaint wont work cos it tends to trap moisture behind the paint film, which can cause damage long term. Certainly it is serviceable for now . Although it wouldnt hurt to clean the concrete and prep prior to new finish. Off the top of my head I will say that stark white + orange or red masonry rarely is a good combo - look at bronzes, dark gray-greens, etc.

We ended up with Shoji and Urbane Bronze but think the general rule follows. I really had a hard time choosing whether or not to paint the soffits dark or just the fascia. Since we decided to not trim out windows, kept the garage door white, etc., we felt the dark soffits would add dimension. Now I am so glad we did! Think it would have looked a bit flat for me with Shoji soffits, but think dark soffits can look very heavy and clunky depending on other choices you are making and the style of the house. In general you will paint soffits either whole house color (white duck in your case) or whatever trim color you are using. Hope this helps! Sorry didnt have any whole house photos.

No to the one accent wall. Bring in a reference to a slightly more Spanish mission vibe by adding dark wood accents: dark wood front door, garage door, line the front walk and deck with dark wood planter. Paint the deck railing. Consider some tile murals with dark wood trim hung on the exterior wall of the garage by the entry and on the deck walls. Dark wood outdoor furniture. You are never going to get a classic mission look from the house, but by referring to the color scheme you will ground and soften the stark white.

You are right on with lighting and planting changes.

Thank you, @kendrah and @HU-187528210. Great ideas! I’m not a fan of white houses with such simple lines (unless coastal). What door colors complement the modern white architecture with high desert landscape—I do like the dark (but not black) wood ideas once we replace them? Follow up to my door paint query, perhaps this warm green (BM Mohegan Sage; not my house in photo, of course and slightly warmer stucco)?
