Floor outlet placement - Living Room!! FURNITURE LAYOUT RECS!

I am looking for advice on floor placement for outlets in the living room. I'm not sure where they should go.

Attached is a picture of our floorplan and a sample layout of the furniture placement I will most likely do!

Also, I am open to any other suggestions regarding furniture placement. We are starting over on all of our furniture when we move so I am open to any recommendations as far as layout!

Do you already have a rug you plan to use? What are the dimensions? you certainly want to accommodate that.

Not re the living room, but looking at your pantry area I had a thought. What if the bar and pantry swapped places? The bar could be behind cabinet doors on the dining room side, but also open on the pantry side. How convenient that would be for entertaining, and for everyday. It brings the pantry closer to the kitchen, and, just assuming here, but you probably use the pantry more than the bar.

Thanks for all the great responses! I appreciate you all taking the time to chime in. Oakleyok, the child's chair belonged to my DH's grandparents -the matching "adult chair" resides with his uncle -- no one sits on the little chair, but we like having it on display Rosie, I will work on a floor plan. I have been busy with other things but decided I need to do this so we are ready to entertain this fall. We rarely if ever actually use the fireplace (maybe 3 times in the 25 years we have lived here). You stated it beautifully "You need a room that invites people in and allows them to circulate freely and then find a seat that fits them and, in a few cases, that can be turned to join a conversation or face a speaker, like that nice scroll-arm chair. " My question is how to create a "room that invites people in". Ellendi, we do have a love seat and sofa now because that's what we had when we lived in New York -- 2 sofas sound appealing to me because we can always use more seating -- when you say to line up the sofas with the fireplace, I assume you mean perpendicular to the fireplace and not parallel -is that right? -the chairs are just near the round table because we brought the table from NYC and then my MIL gave us those chairs when she downsized -- we love the china cabinet -we bought it when we were first married and lived in London - it might fit in our dining room but unfortunately that it is the one room in the house that is small -we do sometimes bring in dining room chairs for our meetings and parties Teacats -thanks for the advice about how to use our existing furniture -our sofa is shot, so we will be replacing that and probably the love seat at the same time --it is an excellent point about covering up the air grate -i will have to find something that can be in front of it without blocking airflow -maybe a table with slim bench chairs underneath -and i like the idea of a tall mirror over the fireplace Camlan -i love your suggestion of moving our current furniture around to figure out what works for us -we do not use our dining room much as we have a breakfast room connected to the kitchen where we usually eat -we never go to the dining room from the entry way -and i don't think our friends do so often either One other point -- we are willing to consider a different rug - I like this rug a lot (it has some of Omar Khayyam's Rubiat on it) -but DH thinks we should get something more modern -and we could, of course, get a different size Thanks again!

You're welcome, my pleasure. I mentioned wall mounting tv on an angling arm, and there are various types of arms available, depending on your needs. 'TV extension arms' would extend the tv out to mitigate the distance, these arms are also available with varying angling capabilities One example: [https://www.houzz.com/products/pdx650-full-motion-mount-for-37-75-tvs-black-prvw-vr~29971748[(https://www.houzz.com/products/pdx650-full-motion-mount-for-37-75-tvs-black-prvw-vr~29971748) This mount would extend tv out about 2 feet, and is pretty streamlined, with tv being able to sit 2'' from wall when mount is pushed back, so that's a nice feature. Just one example, and there are arms that extend out further than this one, lots of options available to suit your specific needs. I like the idea of wall mounting tv on an arm - but another good option could be using a mobile tv console, and if you like industrial styling, at all - there are a ton of wheeled options, in that style category, alone. So with either wall mounting on extension arm, or using a mobile console, your boys should be able to move the tv, versus having to move their seating... although, they could do a combination of both - if it's more comfortable, etc. I love that second light fixture, also. So many fun styles in the Sputnik type of design. :)

I suggest grouping whatever living room furniture you buy around the fireplace. It is what I did in my long living room (mine is wider than yours). Here are some layout suggestions: Before you buy any furniture, make sure you have the room to lay it out something similar to the above suggestions. Put tape on the floor, if you have to and make sure you have enough room to walk around the furniture. You can also try Basset Furniture and/or La-Z-Boy showrooms. They can help you with furniture arrangement and they do not charge you, like a designer does. For the TV, you could either get an entertainment center that will fit right or left of the fireplace or your could even mount your TV on the wall (I have 2 TV's that are wall mounted and I love it). When I was getting ready to move into my house 3 years ago, I needed brand new living room, dining room, and family room furniture. I shopped sales and I found my 2 sofas that are in my living room first at a furniture store selling La-Z-Boy furniture. I got lucky! The sofas were on sale for over 60% off and after choosing them, everything else fell into place. For the family room, I went to a La-Z-Boy showroom, found a reclining sofa I loved, and it was also on sale. I choose soft, neutral colors for it and two rocking recliners. We use this room to relax and watch movies on our big TV in the family room. I also suggest looking at rooms on Houzz and see what appeals to you, in style and color.

Here is a layout for your room. This layout creates a 'foyer' for your space. When you enter there is a console table or cabinet against the wall with a mirror or art above. This cabinet can be overflow storage from the kitchen if required. The three seater sofa divides the foyer area from the living room space, it faces the TV that is placed on or above a console on the opposite wall and there are two lounge chairs added to form the conversation area. This provides an area for adults and children to exchange ideas and watch educational shows and movies together as a family unit. Place art or wall decor above the fireplace and adjacent to the dining table. Children grow up to be adults. Plenty of children were raised in homes that didn't turn their homes into a gymnasium. No ball playing in the house. That is an appropriate activity for outside. Balls leave skuff marks on the walls. Homes are created for the total family and not at the expense of the adults. OK, I will get off my soapbox now but you get the idea.

That doesn't look like everything is scaled properly?

What size rug did you draw in?

Not much space to open that door to the deck/patio.

Not much space to walk in from the foyer and go through the living room.

When you draw it out you need to add even more dimensions like furniture size, space from rug edge to the walls, etc.

The furniture on the inspo pic is not to scale! This is just an inspo pic I found online as a general idea of the furniture layout I would like to use. I would like to get a 9x13 rug for the living room.

You need to lay it all out to scale. There are free online programs that will let you lay it out and re-size furniture to the actual size you would be buying.

Can you have electricians come back after you have your rug and furniture in place? Once they are arranged you will be able to figure where they make sense. We have one just under edge of sofa and one around midpoint of area rug on one side to accommodate a chair and table or two chairs.

Ideally, I would place outlets underneath each sofa in case you get power recliners in the future. You can also plug a lamp into those outlets under the sofa. Placing it under one of the arm chairs would be tougher to get the exact placement right, but I would want one there too, so 3 outlets total.

I had to give an exact location for my 2 floor outlets during construction because I am on a slab. Of course, I ended up arranging the furniture differently than I had originally planned! One of my outlets ended up completely covered by the area rug. I made it work with the other outlet, but had to use an extension cord and part of it is under the area rug. Not ideal, but it isn't a high traffic area.

Some people will cut holes in area rugs to run the plugs through it, but I wasn't willing to do that with a hand-knotted rug.
