A lexicon of repeat flowering roses
Comments (28)I looked up Cadwell's Pink in QR and it wasn't there nor under it's other name, Pink Pet. A number of American sources but no European. Listed as a Ch, China?, so it may not be hardy here. Lyda Rose also not in QR but a shrub so might be OK here. Hybridized by Lettunich and introduced in 1994 which might be why it's not in QR. This past summer the roses that have been the most continuous have seen Elmshorn, Elveshorn, Knirps (truly continuous)and Robusta. The two E's are never mentioned here and Knirps, a small ground cover, is apparently unknown. Robusta is grown more widely as it is z4 hardy and a brilliant red. BS is a problem especially this wet year. Hardiness of course is a main issue here so such truly continuouse bloomers, at least from what I read, the teas and china's, are just not in the cards. There are many roses that bloom in flushes, not surprising since new flowers require new growth. Then there is the matter of disbudding. I've done very little of that as I find it difficult to keep up with normal chores with roses. Supposedly it promotes better bloom. If that is so I wonder if my two E's bloom better since they naturally disbud, in other words they don't form hips. The remnant of the flower just falls off like the petals. Makes a clean look at all times and possibly helps with rebloom....See MoreRepeating white on the exterior to speak to white windows
Comments (66)Thanks ckinkopf for your ideas and thoughts. Glad you think it will look okay when we are all done. I think you are the first poster to mention we should have done darker windows, although I have thought that. Ignoring the windows for now is likely what we will do as I am out of ideas for repeating the white. Most of our windows are fiberglass which can certainly be painted. The basement windows and two others on the house are vinyl which I would be more reluctant to paint. The vinyl windows were bought 5 years ago and won't last as long as the fiberglass, so maybe in 10-15 years if they need replacing, we will swap them out for fiberglass and then paint them all a grey to match the window trim. At that point we would need to repaint the siding anyway so we would need scaffolding. Yikes, I hope we finish this reno by the time we need to repaint it all!!!...See MoreSome new and repeats and its hot day
Comments (10)LONG LEGGED LAP DANCER - ffo . I think the scapes are shorter this year. Not a lot shorter but less than previous years. INCA PUZZLE - decided to do a better job of opening today. Only one bloom had that cupping effect which I don't like but the colors on this one makes up for any bad days. CONCRETE BLONDE - this is one fantastic daylily and the first year I've seen it do this. Open flat and then get this pinching effect later in the day. WINTER TREASURE - one of the best near whites I have. Always opens in the early morning no matter the temps and put on great show each year. Yesterday first pic and then today second pic. CAPE ROMAIN HARBOR- very reliable and puts on a show this morning. Couldn't get all the blooms in the pic but it I just love this one. PATTERN EVOLUTION - looked perfect this morning and yes, that is BLACK FATHOM DEPTHS behind it. Highly recommend this one. CLOWN PARADE - has been opening multiple blooms over the past 2 days. Just perfect so grateful to Kay for sharing with me. I have more but I'll do another post tomorrow. More rain coming so hopefully by mid week we cool down again....See MoreA Few New Ones And A Few Repeats
Comments (11)First, a big thanks to all for liking the daylilies. I am going to answer Celeste first about Lillian's Thin Ice. I had to go back in the time machine to find out just when I bought it. It came as an Instant Buy on the Lily Auction from Tink--Michele Taylor-- and it arrived in the fall of 2014. I have checked a few places for availability and was coming up empty, but good news-- I did find it at Shady Rest Gardens. A double fan is listed for $25. I have bought a couple of daylilies from Doris and David Bishop of SRG and received very nice plants. In fact, the major one I wanted was not listed for sale, but they sold it to me--really nice people to do business with. I already have a daylily on reserve for their sale which is coming up in July. Yes, it looks as if this was purple day, didn't realize it until everyone pointed it out. It's too bad about Carmen Renee, I always think of Celeste's picture of it, so beautiful. I know this weather is killing the color on so many of our plants. Glad to get that pic of Susan Weber since it was almost killed a couple of years ago by some strange insects that were in the roots. Now it is better than it was before, go figure. Nancy, to your point about the short scapes on LTI, as I recall, ours put on height every year, so perhaps next year your scapes will be taller, hope so....See MoreAnnie Deighnaugh
