What brand of door mounted trash pullout for inset cabinets?
Comments (37)Not as though anyone really cares about a trash can, but I installed the unit yesterday. Had to use shims under the base of the unit so it would sit high enough to clear the bottom of the face frame, then just screwed through the shims down into cabinet bottom. I debated about attaching the door because the cabinet guy ordered me a new door since I already had a knob installed in the corner of this one. I need to have a centered pull instead. I figured this would give me an opportunity to practice on the installation. It was easier than I thought and now I don't know if I can bare to redo the install on my new door!...See MoreCrown Point and other inset door folk - door closing question
Comments (14)Tina, I think if you search my name lesmis you'll find other pictures of my kitchen. I am working on putting together an album on Photobucket of the "before" and "after" but have been too busy finishing up the rest of the house remodel to get to it. You can send me an email at swlesmis@hotmail.com if you need other pics, I can send them to you if you need something in particular. I think people are afraid to email someone directly...not sure why, but I won't send out ANY chain mail, not funny, sad/guilt provoking, political or any other chain mail...I personally HATE it, so I promise all I'll send is what you ask for! :) I do have exposed hinges and they are non-mortised, my cabinet guy insisted on those too because they are much easier to install I think. I hunted high and low for simple hinges and either couldn't find them or they were outrageously expensive. I ended up using Amerock ones that my cabinetmaker suggested, they are actually their antique finish and not the ORB because the ORB didn't match my darker ORB knobs as well. I think you are right, the Blum or hidden hinges don't require any sort of magnet. My cabinetmaker made sure that I would like the little tug you need to open the exposed hinge doors with the magnets, and it's fine, even with glass in the cabinets it's no big deal, but it might be to some people I guess. Let me know if you need any other pics. Kat :)...See MoreInset cabinet doors...what's the deal?
Comments (25)Most of the reasons for the price differences have been documented pretty well from earlier postings; the basic reasons have to do with the fact that a tighter tolerance is necessary, so there is a higher degree of craftsmanship required. The same is true on the installation side. Typical overlay cabinets are very forgiving as they are being installed; with inset, any change in the straightness or levelness of the walls and floor can cause the cabinet to be "racked" which results in the door not looking properly placed in the opening of the cabinet. Most installers are very good at using shims and other leveling techniques so that isn't a problem, just takes more care. Showplace builds both inset and overlay cabinets and there isn't a huge difference in price - probably somewhere between 5-7%, but there are actual material and labor differences that make this up (not all other brands would follow this logic though). - Wall cabinets are 13 or 14" deep vs. 12" for overlay; which adds material to the end panels, tops, bottoms, and shelves. The increased depth allows for the interior storage depth lost when a door sits "in the frame" as opposed to sitting "on the frame." - Base cabinets all have a plywood top which adds rigidity to the cabinet, helping to prevent installation racking; standard overlay base cabinets do not get this kind of top. - Beaded inset frames have horizontal pieces miter-fitted into the vertical pieces; it means they are all longer and require precise fitting - and the vertical members have multiple notches cut into them to receive the horizontal pieces. Showplace used to charge an inset "craftsmanship" premium, which is quite typical in the industry, but earlier this year reduced pricing by about 18% eliminating the pricing components that didn't have tangible reason for being there as compared to overlay cabinets. Comments (14)Gigharbor, we don't care if it's done! Progress pics are very fun and an interesting way to sort of see behind the scenes. Posting pics is easy if you follow the instructions on Buehl's "new to kitchens? Posting pics?" thread. You'll need an account on a photosharing site like Photobucket or Flickr. In fact, since you're practically my neighbor, if you get the photos loaded into your account and can't master embedding them here I'll do that for you. Email me through my page if you'd like. No pressure. I'd love to see how it's all coming together! Sorry for the hijack, OP!...See Morechampyinz
