Uvularia

Mukdenia

Shredded Umbrella Plant

I vote for Uvularia. I have had Mukdenia in a quite shady location, for years, and it has never amounted to much. Suppose I should re-locate it to see if there might be an improvement. I have no idea about the umbrella plant, as I don't grow it...

I have two species of shredded umbrella plant, this being my favorite. I am far north and have it grown in a good deal of sun.

Are you planting anything, Julie? Cindeea, great to hear. Folks, I'd like to read about what folks are growing and planting on the main page, but I'm afraid to start a thread because I do know that there is a separate post for seed starting and growing, but they don't seem to be in Florida. I think they're all under lights in frost land. Sharing in the excitement of other people's plantings is a vicarious joy. And simple is fine by me. Take for example California Poppies - I've never grown them and can't remember ever seeing them. Very easy from seed by all accounts, but they didn't sprout for me last spring. When they came up when I October sowed, folks two counties over heard me exclaiming "I've got poppies!" All I have are tiny little poppy plants these many months later, yet I'm still every bit as excited about that. YOU are a tease, Cindeea. "got more seeds today" Uh-huh. I'm not interested in what seeds you got. No, not me. Probably nobody else either. No, I'm pretty sure that wouldn't be even remotely.... OK, so that didn't fool ya. What did you get? Huh? Huh? What? Come on!! What?

Trailrunner - I missed your previous post - the owner of the business owns the entire property that has both the business and the stone cottage on it. Our plan is that we first buy the business, then buy DH's Grandmother's house, not change our lifestyle and then purchase the entire property that the business is located on. I know that it sounds so ridiculously old fashioned, but I really want to be able to give our children the option of giving them a leg up on housing should they decide that any of them may want to stay in the immediate area of us. I believe in long term goals and in the end we could be able to give each one of our children that option if we play our cards right. As for that chandie - she is still on the office floor. I'm rolling on the DR right now and hanging stuff back up on th ewalls in the freshly painted office. I just swatched BM Ashwood on the bedroom walls because as soon as the DR is done I'm off to the MBR and DD's room upstairs!

I don't think someone has metioned this, but sound out the first name with your last name. If you have a tongue twisting last name (like mine with two "Z"s) you want to go with simple classic names or the whole name will be too much. I always loved the name Zackary, but with a Z last name that was out. I choose Thomas for my son because of that reason and he could be either Tommy, Tom or Thomas when he grew up. I use to call him Thomas up to grade school. Then he came home one day and told me his name now was Tommy. Today at 25 he goes by Tom. So he has been all three. My preference is for classic names that have stood the test of time and are not trendy. Maybe because I have such a classic name myself. Clare

Congratulations. We have lots of May sons in our family--and they tend to share their birthdays on Mother's Day quite often. In fact, I had one on Mother's Day, but no discounts or sales were offered at the hospital. One uncle and son share May 13th, and another uncle and son share May 12th. I bake a lot of cakes in May!

It's been years since I've grown Mukdenia but I seem to recall a bit of sun encourages better, redder foliage, so maybe not that one.

I will vote for uvularia, as it’s the native plant and worthy of extra live for that reason (though I actually have all three!)

Thanks so much, guys! Uvularia it is! I bought all three plants and I'm doing that thing where I'm walking around trying to find the right spots. Now that I know shredded umbrella plant and mukdenia can take more sun, that opens up more options! Thanks, again!

Violetsnapdragon....getting all three seems like a great decision. I don't want to throw cold water on the Uvularia choice, but the reason I didn't recommend it was that I added 3 plants to my garden years ago and they never bloomed. I still see one come up every spring but just foliage. And they were not really in deep shade, but did get a little sun in the late afternoon. I have no idea what it is about my garden they haven't liked, but maybe some of those gardeners who have had success wtih it, could explain what conditions they are growing in.
