What type of fixture are these bulbs in? A 4" recessed housing is going to have a problem with bulb choices. They just don't make a brighter par 20 bulb in an LED that will not have electronics failure in a small recessed housing, especially if there is insulation on top of the housing. Anything that says "spot" instead of "flood" may help a little bit, but you really need more lumens, or more light bulbs.

Bought the Philips 60w "Warm Glow" LEDs at HD yesterday (under $10/ea). On full power they aren't as bright as an incandescent 60w bulb. They DO have the softer, warmer glow that an incandescent bulb does and warms even more as it dims. Still doesn't dim as low as a "real" light bulb. I do like how LEDs don't produces as much heat. Looks like there is going to have to be some compromising. As "cave like" as DH's bathroom is (and he wanted it that way), 180 total watts probably isn't going to be enough light. The 300w (dimmable) was plenty light but it was so white and messed with his bathroom color palette...does he care? NO! But I do :) What to do. Call Philips and ask them to make a 100w "warm glow" LED that will dim lower. That's it! I'm sure they'll get right on that! <g> I considered buying a set of the Crees too but I'm really not liking the whiteness of the LEDs. I'm sure it's OK in some applications. Oh, the Philips don't visibly flicker or hum when turned down.

How bright do you want the bulbs? Clear glass or white? G40 and A15 bulbs are smaller--make sure you buy them with the base size you are looking for. PartyLights.com has some lovely LED bulbs for string lights--which I have also started using in other fixtures when I want warm, low light. If you want utility lighting over your kitchen table, you will want brighter. If you want soft, dining light, 5 of these bulbs will be more than adequate. 40W appliance bulbs may also be something to check out.

Old incandescent tungsten lighting had a 2700 K color to it, its towards the red end of the color spectrum, that is what we are used to. I replace with 3000K LED's (it's the color of halogen incandescent bulbs), 3500K is OK as well. Go too far beyond that, and things begin looking unnatural, it looks out of place inside a home. And, as Celadon points out, always go with 90 CRI or greater to keep colors looking correct. The 100W equivalent LED's will be quite bright, so, yes, do adjust the equivalent light output downward as you see fit. Or, put a dimmer on them. I don't find the bulb brand to be too critical. I buy at the box stores on price in 6 or 8 bulb packages, and, yes, occasionally one fails prematurely.
