need help for re-upholstering CL Chair
Comments (17)hi there Lyban! Sorry to chime in so late in the day; I missed your post earlier. In my experience it would be almost impossible to upholster from the top down instead of bottom-up. The entire process depends on placing quite a bit of weight on the jute webbing, which is stretched tightly across the wooden frame, then softened by the springs. If you try to do it backwards, you can't achieve the same amount of tension and it will sag, plus it will likely put too much stress on the leather cover and stretch it out of shape. Hmmm. The thing is, the hard part about putting a leather cover on is the measurement and pulling to fit. In this case, that has already been done. I really don't think it would be too hard to carefully take off the cover and then rebuild the innards from the ground up. Since you've already cut out the webbing and springs, I'm afraid I don't see any other way to do it and make the chair comfortable and able to take any amount of weight. Be brave! :-) Of course you can just wait to get it done professionally, but it's honestly not that hard to do, and you can just follow the tack holes from the previous job when you put the leather back on. You will need to get new webbing (quite cheap) and a webbing stretcher which are both available at Joanne's Fabrics or online. The sites already listed by others give you some good pointers, and here's a good beginner's book I can recommend with very easy-to-follow instructions and great illustrations: Here is a link that might be useful: Simply Upholstery Step-by-Step...See MoreNeutral fabric choices for upholstering chairs *PHOTOS*
Comments (17)geokid - You are on the right track, and what I was thinking only in a bit larger scale and texture. I did THINK of PLAID. LOL I don't know if it would be too casual, but pretty sure plaid would not look good on the lines of my chairs. Hey, the floral look is a lot less now that the wine/red rug has moved out. I have considered covering the chair seats, but keep hesitating because my mother, and both grandmothers made those petit point covers. I had just 4 chairs, and when I inherited more, that's when I thought the other rug needed to go. snookums2 - Yes, that color would look lovely with the rug, but would clash terribly with the other rug, and my breakfast room chairs just around the corner. Also, those chairs are faux suede. DH and I tried taking them out and placing the gold chairs around the breakfast room table, but they didn't look good with the glass top table. My daughter suggested we find a wooden table. I would love too because I despise the glass headaches, but a new table will have to wait unless I come up on GOOD DEAL. Going out to look at fabric today if I have time. In the link below, is a paisley print. I'd still prefer something with a tone on tone texture. Comments (26)Thanks everyone for the suggestions!! I think you've all made it easier for me to go with a more streamlined chair. Seeing your comments makes it a lot more clear why something simple works better despite the table being ornate. I feel pretty strongly that I shouldn't get more upholstered chairs. It feels like too many things going on. Plus from a practical standpoint, I don't think I want the added stress of worrying about dinner guests messing up the upholstery. (Part of the reason I went with the damask pattern is that I felt it hide small stains better). But as has been suggested, I think maybe the wooden chairs need some kind of cushion in a creamy fabric to tie in with the fabric and color schemes. So thanks so much. To answer the questions above: The room is already painted. The wall is woodland snow and the trim is bone white (both Ben Moore paints). I wanted to keep the paint scheme very calm (read: boring!) because so many other elements were going on. This is a old house that Ive spent the last 14 months gut renovating. I live in Brooklyn. If your curious about the renovation, I have a blog. (www.brooklynlimestone.blogspot.com) I haven't made much of a dent with the decorating yet but I'd love to hear any suggestions. Its pretty daunting but Im happy to nearly over with the construction part....See Moreneed help matching chairs to table (grey ash)
Comments (6)the rest of the room is very light grey walls with white wainscotting on the bottom. The main back wall is going to be an edge to edge wall wrap on a white birch forest background (see below) floor is boring natural oak hardwood. Yes the A frame is fully detachable. I've actually emailed the manufacturer to see if I can just purchase the walnut A frame but they haven't gotten back to me. Could I actually stain from this grey ash to a walnut? And thanks Beth currently your #3 is my front runner...See MoreJason
