Would you add Shiplap to a family room in a suburban So Cal house?
Comments (16)There is no way I could give an informed opinion whether or not one element of a design would be out of place without seeing the whole plan for colors, fabrics, materials, furniture, etc.. Taken out of context, lots of design ideas would seem out of place at first blush. I live in a brick house in Georgia and our lower level has brick floors and one wall of 8" (or 10", now I don't remember!) lap siding. It's on the inside of an exterior wall and I think it looks perfect, even though ours is not a farmhouse and I had never seen the shiplap version of this idea on HGTV when it first occurred to me. Walls can be constructed or faced with a variety of materials--- wood, plaster, drywall, glass, stone, tiled with ceramic or stone...l have even seen vinyl panels as walls in a mobile home. In your place I would a design a home that pleases ME and not let my friends' HGTV watching influence it....See MoreHow would you add to the roofline of this home?
Comments (17)I'd extend the ridge of the original brown shingled roof to the right edge with the same slope on the back but put a forward facing gable over the right front with enough overhang to cover the bay window. I'd put the gutter drainpipes on the two corners of the addition -- not beside the bay window. I'd also try to find some matching stone and stone panels (or choose one of the colors from the existing stone -- or brick in one of those colors) to use for covering the foundation of the addition (panels) and to outline the sidewalk (actual stone or brick) to make the sidewalk the full width of the stone and steps or, better yet, redo the entire sidewalk in those stone or brick. https://www.google.com/search?q=brick+panels+for+covering+exterior+foundation&client=firefox-b-1-d&source=univ&tbm=shop&tbo=u&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwi6nN3a0_3nAhUhnOAKHRf8ArcQsxh6BAgOECs&biw=1366&bih=654...See MoreStucco House - exterior - what would you add/change?
Comments (6)Agree that the photo doesn't show the whole facade well enough at the moment. It would be great to see the whole house front. Also agree that shutters don't belong anywhere on the house at all. See this brief article https://www.lifeofanarchitect.com/residential-architecture-101-shutters/ I do like your idea of the bougainvillea on a pergola - but that happens to be one of my favorite plants/flowers so I'm totally biased :) Agree with the tree pruning too OP except you probably need more than one pruned away. Consider also taking out the barricade of bushes along your walkway and redesigning the walkway and the landscaping so it is more open and welcoming....See MoreHow would I add a screened porch in the front of my house.?
Comments (16)A three season room, french doors to it? Call an architect. Footers, headers, permits, roof lines, and money. It isn't just "add a screened porch" . ..unless you use the one you have Otherwise? Buy a beautiful gazebo, and put it where it best suits the view. Enjoy in good weather with screens...See Morebtydrvn
