Can't choose a backsplash now, how hard is it to do on my own?
Comments (15)I also did my own backsplash. I had tiled quite a bit in the past, and my recommendation is to buy an inexpensive tile saw. I bought a Harbor Freight cheapie that I have used for several tile jobs. Planning your layout is the most important thing. I would NOT use mastic if you use a natural stone, as the oils in the mastic can stain the stone. Fortunately real thin set is a lot cheaper and is easily mixed with a drill and "egg beater" type of attachment. If you do decide to DIY there is not better place on the web than the John Bridge Tile Forum for advice. Also, don't let the counter top people talk you into putting in the 4" backsplash if you don't like the look. I know that a lot of people tile above the 4" backsplash, but to me it always looks like an afterthought. We lived with our unfinished backsplash for over a year and it wasn't a problem to leave it just painted drywall during that period of time. Actually, to be honest, I still have 2 small areas in the kitchen where I haven't done the backsplash yet, and we've been in the house for almost 5 years, but I don't suggest that you do that! Here's my tumbled copper slate backsplash:...See MoreNeed help with choosing backsplash tile please!
Comments (11)Bill, you clearly need some crab or gingko dear! LOL (As your new OCD friend I can say these things *winks*!) Traci can't get those first tiles because they have been discontinued. Do you know of a different tile company that makes something similar? She would love those first tiles, actually she DID love those first tiles until she found out that the sample the company sent had been discontinued. Traci, I hope I didn't put words in your mouth, but that's what you are asking right? If anyone knows of a different source for the first tiles? I do like those first ones with the mother of pearl type tiles mixed in, but I also think the second one you found would also be pretty! When I get back from running errands I'll try to see if I can help you find those other ones. There was no identifying info anywhere on the sample? Not a number of any sort or color name? Comments (20)So tired of hearing " but that will make it look dated" or "it wouldn't be good for resale" Everything is going to be dated at some point, the kitchen designers, cabinet companies and appliance companies make sure of that. Example: stainless steel appliances were just coming on the market 15 years ago when we gutted our kitchen for a remodel. It was hard for me to find stainless in my area at that time, I live in a small mid western town. So, have you noticed in the past few years appliance companies have been trying to bring out new colors, grayed looking stainless, now ice white etc. they are trying to make people think their stainless appliances are soon going to be "dated". But I have read in several articles that stainless is still the number one choice. I chose a cinnamon stained cherry wood for our new build. I thought about white because that is the trend right now, but I reasoned cherry cabinets will always be in style while the white trend Has just a few more years. I won't be a slave to trends. Just my opinion....See MoreJenny
