OT: Per request, a few select before/after whole house remodel
Comments (20)Thanks guys! Breezy: I cannot remember the paint color but my painter is still working in the basement so I'll ask him tomorrow. I wanted a warm grey for that room. Neutral but not a cold feeling. Enduring: the kids' bath is black slate. I love slate but did not want as much variation in size of the tiles as most multicolor slate tends to have lots of variation...easy to stub toes. Black slate does not and I loved the black/white theme so it is easy to change accessories as the kids grow up. The guest bath is slate but not black. It is actually mostly navy with some gold tones. Very interesting and again less variation in size. Still waters: we had the heating system reworked (boiler in basement so its radiant heat) so we adjusted some of the baseboard heaters and took that one out and kept the one on the back wall. Worked out well to add the extra storage....See MoreBefore After 1935 Kit Home Kitchen Remodel RTA Cabinets
Comments (36)Michey312, sorry for the rude comments, they are no help at all. I think you did a fabulous job. I too was beaten up by this forum when we did our own plumbing for a bathroom remodel. It was mid pandemic and the "pros" were just not available. Well it's been over three years and the bathroom plumbing is working just fine. We fixed issues with previous plumbing that was done 30 years ago by a licenced plumber as well as the required modifications for the new fixtures. We installed new lighting, tile, toilet, vanity and soaking tub. Granted we decided not to change the layout to simplify the plumbing and electrical, but in the end we were very pleased with our handy work. I am in the middle of working a quote for Conestoga cabinets for a new kitchen (new construction). I like the inset cabinets and want to use the extended leg (face frame) option. How did you decide where to place the extended legs? It is clear that they would not be appropriate on all of the cabinets in my design. Also on your island (which I love), it looks like the extended leg is wider than the extended legs in your other base cabinets. Can you confirm? was that an option? It looks like you might have used a panel on the side of your island. How much did the trim details extend the size of your island? Hopefully you are still monitoring Houzz. Thanks in advance for any information you are willing to share. Again, great job!...See MoreRemodelling kitchen in a 1985 (post and beam) home. Beam questions.
Comments (10)The reason that I asked about the inspection is that the home’s construction is out of the norm. It’s much more difficult for a standard home inspector to look at a post and beam and know much of anything about it when they really might see 1 every 7-8 years rather than the standard stick framed construction that the majority of homes are built. In those specialty situations, many people would have already consulted with a structural engineer, during the inspection period. Just like a home on a cliff might consult a soils engineer. Or a low home in a flood plain consult with a house raising company. But given the further info about the hot market, I guess a lot of people are forgoing specialty trade inspections! Which is scary to me. I would definitely want a structural engineer inspect this from soil, through, foundation, to ridge line, and environmental stressors like wind or snow. Post and beam have more visible and discrete load paths than do stick built, which helps. But because they rely a great deal more on heavy point loading, the foundations for those points become ever more critical to ensure stability. Changing or adding to those load paths through beam removals or other alterations is major complicated surgery. That requires that engineer. Please let us know what he says!...See MoreBefore and After Kitchen Remodel
Comments (60)@Chrissy Torres, I am in the middle of a very similar kitchen redo. They just took the wall down today. Only difference is my space is a bit more narrow so we couldn't get an island down the middle and we are doing it at one end. Can I ask what backspash tile you chose and which cabinet hardware? I really love both! Searching Bocchi sink is what brought me to your post and I was wondering the use of all of the gadgets too and if it is worth it. I could see myself still using a regular strainer, cutting board, etc. Your kitchen is stunning!...See MoreMcGuire + Co. Kitchen & Bath
