Comments (8)Craftsman style was about the joinery of the woodwork. Exposed rafter tails are common as are brackets. Below is a home with brackets in front, exposed rafter tails on the sides, and the typical wide front porch with its brick-based columns. In the photo below you can see another typical feature of Craftsman style, the underside of the roof is exposed in the overhangs. Roofing was often 1x8 boards rather than plywood, then covered over with tar paper and shingles. You might see fascia across the rafter ends, but there was no soffit. The house on the left side of the photo has soffit under the eaves while the Craftsman style house does not.Mid-century Modern often has a nearly flat roof or may use a shed roof style. There will be strong vertical and/or horizontal visual design elements and glass walls.Mid-century was married to Ranch style as shown in the photo below. Comments (15)As functionthenlook says, check out Sears catalog plans. It is very much in keeping with what they were offering. People often used Sears plans as inspiration, without actually buying the kit from Sears. And your area of the country (upper midwest) had plenty of wood and carpentry skills available. I disagree with your realtor about the ceiling height. In my experience, even middle class folks were building good sized houses in your area; as I said, land and wood was cheap and plentiful in the early 20th century. You do see a difference in that your home has simple to no details - things that distinguish the more expensive homes from a “ builder grade” such as yours. But yours is a beautiful, well proportioned house that looks to be well maintained. Congratulations!...See MoreWhat style of house do I have?
Comments (11)@User don't I know it! This was just egregious, Who knows if the OP inherited this house, is selling it, is living in it, has infirm grandparents who can't keep up with it, etc. No one asked how to make it look better-- just what style it was. I sometimes think that it makes people feel superior if others post less than Instagram-ready curated photos. Its just unkind. Let's give one another a little grace, shall we?...See Morejck910
