How can I modernize my knotty pine-paneled kitchen?
Comments (12)Thanks, mjsee! Unfortunately the nearest Ikea is over a hundred miles away from us so I'm not exactly sure we'll go that route cabinet-wise. As for the walls, I tend to agree even if my first reaction when I saw this room was "Oh, eff my life, we need to paint this ASAP." It's grown on me and I definitely don't like the idea that once I paint it we can't really go back. I could see one day taking it down and drywalling it (the insulation is non-existent as we're in a warm part of California so I'd put some in at that point), but we're not there yet. Nicole--I love that look, I just don't think it'll work in my space. :\ Stacey--thanks! WRT the living space, it's set up fairly similarly to the scene shown: two green microfiber couches instead of a sectional, a black/glass coffee table, and from Overstock. We have a black/dark brown TV table, a desk hidden behind the TV, and generally dark-colored wood or pine bookshelves dotted around the room. Oh, and a massive cat tree. :) I took the shelves down from the windows. The fans we brought in are amazing--dark wood blades with these Steampunk-like brushed nickel bodies. Comments (2)I like the paint idea, however I would do a semi gloss white for the background wall and a matt warm dark grey for the bar area. I would even consider a stain for the dark grey bar to allow some of the wood grain to shine through. It would be a cool contrast with the clean walls. The gold could look good depending on the actual colour however keep in mind it will be quite the yellowish tone as it's a lower ceiling and already in the darker part of the room... How about just keeping the ceiling white and replacing the sconces with some pretty gold ones, making it look slightly more sophisticated? You can also use gold accent colours in 2-3 bar stools... Not sure what the bar top is made of, but a similar colour dark grey in a glossy finish would make it look quite cohesive with the rest of the bar and the avocado arm rest will be able to shine through. Have fun!!...See MoreSoffit beams in new build - I think I/builder made a mistake
Comments (52)Still haven’t decided. This is what it looks like currently with paint and all trim. It is growing on me. I imagine once backsplash and flooring and pendant lights are in, I won’t notice it as much. But I don’t want to regret not having him fix it forever. Builder has offered to move soffit back to be flush with cabinets and we will put a piece of flat trim at cabinet and soffit joint. He did mention being concerned with the possibility of damaging cabinets in the process. He also said he would remove soffit altogether if we want. Again the only concern being the cabinets potentially being damaged. I have to decide soon....See MoreI think I made a big mistake....
Comments (40)I haven't read all of the comments, so someone else may have already suggested this. I love the coral and turquoise, so I like the pop of color from your living room curtains. You also have the color in your sofa pillows and if you add a little big of that coral color pop on the other side of the room and you'll have a cohesive look to the room overall. You could also change the color from coral to yellow since the pic above the fireplace has a preeminent pop of yellow. In the power room I'd add artwork that has a lot of white and whatever color you decide to go with to tone down the brightness of the aqua color and give the eyes a place to rest. I do love the color though and overall think you've done well in your choices. Give yourself some credit!...See MoreDanielle O'Beirne
