Outdoor back yard flood lights
Comments (8)Thank you dekeoboe! Why didn't I think to call the # on the boxes. I did and here's what I found out. These LED lights cannot be set to work manually unless you do the double switching on/off twice. Then the lights stay lit for 1 minute. They then reset to auto. Anyway, too complicated for us. I tried it and the lights shut off after a minute, I was trying to get our cat back inside and the yard went black. The man I spoke with was very nice. I was surprised to find out Defiant is a Home Depot brand but I was told they would not work manually. He said with what I paid to install them, the electrician should come back and take them off. He said I should buy a standard flood fixture and buy LED bulbs to screw in. He said I should then return the Defiant fixtures/bulbs back to HD for a refund. Hubby went to HD and bought the fixtures but was told there are no screw in LED outdoor bulbs. So he bought standard outdoor bulbs. At this point, I don't care. I just hope the electrician will change out the fixtures without charging us. Thanks for your info, Gary. Using remotes wouldn't work well in this house. Half the time the TV remotes are missing. I just want to turn the outside lights on and off. Jane...See MoreExterior Flood Light Size question/help

Comments (3)I was afraid of that. That presents difficulties since I would have to have someone (a professional...not my area of expertise, real or imagined) wire it to the outlet in the garden, but in such a way as to be able to (a) turn the light on and off with a switch near the house, and yet (b) still allow me to independently turn off the fountain (plugged into one of the switchable sockets in the garden outlet) from a different switch near the house. I guess something like that must be possible. But it certainly takes the "Y" out of my "DIY." One question I have: I have two fountains...both with UL approval etc...and they both have plugs. Both are thus presumed to be able to be plugged into a weatherproof socket in the garden. So, is it the case that the rules/policies for permanent lights is different than the rules/policies for permanent fountains? Or do we somehow pretend that the fountain isn't 'permanent'? Thanks! Comments (2)Even with out the converters, the LED lamp portion would probably be near $40. That is a substantial difference considering, that the AC/DC transformer need not be expensive. If a room has 8 recessed downlights, installing a single transformer into a wall (say, between the beams above the light dimmer) would be fine. The cheapest recessed LED downlight today is about $80  my room of 8 would cost $640, instead of $320 for LEDs without a transformer in each. If a separate small transformer was even $200, I'd still be well ahead... Heck, why is not there a single-gang sized transformer, with the dimmer (or switch) control outside? On its input there'd be 110V AC, and its output would be DC  as much as the dimmer is set to... It could be used with the existing wiring ("retrofit"), because, if the switch-to-fixture cables were good enough for the 60-200Watts of an old incandescent bulb (the puny 10A-rating means 1100Watts!), they are certainly good enough for the low Watts of the LED fixtures.
