Anyone into reading large print books
Comments (15)My 79 year old father is scheduled for cataract surgery in September, but right now, the print in regular books is too small. He has pooh poohed large print, but my mother happened to find one on a "take one leave one" bookshelf in their adult community and he realized that yeah, this might be good! So I went on abebooks, searched for an author he had recently mentioned and put large-print in the keyword section, and found tons. I ordered two from a vendor who offers free shipping, and voila! Two books, less than $15. Late Father's Day present on its way. (He told us not to get him anything-they just downsized so "stuff" is not welcome.) Once he has read them, he can add them to the aforementioned book shelf, or donate them to the large on-site library. I'm sure large-print books would be welcome. You just need to know how to read the used book lingo-i.e. fine is better than very good, etc....See MoreUpdate on what our book clubs are reading
Comments (18)Kathy- I just got The Storied Life of A.J. Fikrey and so far, I love it! Thanks for the recommendation : ) I finished the book....and I really enjoyed the first half. I think if it had ended there, I would have recommended it to many of my friends. The second half seemed like too many gaps in time and not enough detail. Almost like a different book. Maybe that was intentional or just to keep it short, but I didn't care for it. The ending was not my favorite (don't really like that type) but before any of that was even suspected, it started feeling a bit different around the topiary park. That was when it seemed unrealistic to me. I mean, do people all really act like that? One and done...then long term relationships? And Maya was so cute as a little girl. I felt like I missed a lot of her growing up. Also, I really liked the chief, but thought the closet find (and his reaction) was too contrived. Maybe someone else, but not him. This really helped though, so thank you for the recommendation! It made me realize what I like and didn't like about the pacing and this will help me layout my own story. Oh, and it was funny that I signed up for a free month of Unlimited Kindle to read the book, after starting the free peek on Amazon. Then, I got to his rant about e-readers! Comments (8)I don't know about your specific species of Diphasiastrum, but in my neck of the woods, my experience in trying to move them from areas slated for building suggests that they are difficult to transplant, even when only getting moved short distances (several feet). This agrees with William Cullina (New England Wildflower Society and Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens) in his book Native Ferns, Mosses & Grasses where he says, "I hesitated about whether to include the clubmosses in this work, as they can be quite refractory in cultivation." He goes on to rate them as difficult to propagate from division (though he has had some success) and unsuccessful in his experience from spores. Elsewhere I found a comment that it could be 20 years from spores, so between the two, I imagine that it's not commercially feasible. I've also read some speculation from Cullina and others that they may need mycorrhizal fungi to grow well, though I don't think this is established as fact. I don't know if anyone has tried growing them from tissue culture. I did find one sales listing for a bog Lycopodium, L. appressum from the Meadowview Biological Research Station in VA....See MoreDecember Reading--Last Books Read in 2016
Comments (111)Carolyn, I read a couple some years ago. I must check and see if my library has reprints. I am reading my books slowly at present, there seems to be so many other things to do, like dropping off to sleep! My D gave me a small CD player for Xmas with handy top buttons. Just right for listening to recorded favourite books. I have been accumulating some in case of being confined to bed or having the eye operation for cataracts. I am doing a Scarlett O'Hara on that!...See Moresushipup2
