Comments (20)You're in big trouble! Those are Selenite nymphs as described by H.G. Wells in First Men in the Moon. Good thing you killed them, because the link shows what they look like when they grow up. Here is a link that might be useful: Selenite...See MorePill bugs, sow bugs, rolls polices what ever you call them?
Comments (4)I think you can only delete or edit original posts within the first hour, but no problem. About pill bugs, is there really a problem? From the link above: "Pill bugs can do some damage in the garden, specifically to young, newly planted transplants, but are rarely a problem where well-established plants are concerned. Pill bugs spend most of their time eating dead and decaying material in the garden. This is usually considered a good thing. My garden is full of them and my compost pile even more so. "The natural role of the pill bug is to eat dead and decaying things so they are actually helping things along in the compost pile. If you think pill bugs are eating your garden because you see them quite often, it may be the sneaky slug coming out after dark doing the damage." I grow mostly perennials and they are not damaged by pill bugs As for control around seedlings which they will eat 'Bug Bait' works well. Also there is a bug bait made with iron phosphate that's said to be natural, there's been complaints that it doesn't contain the bitter substance that keeps pets and children from eating it. You can also just leave them like I do. Their numbers will be much less when the ground dries out a little....See MorePill bugs, sow bugs, rolls polices what ever you call them?
Comments (2)Hey, Sheila. You can use spinosad. It comes in concentrated forms where you dilute with water and spray on plants or drench the soil. Locally, I find the bottles in the farm stores in spring and summer. IT WORKS ON PILL BUGS. This is also a natural pesticide. Purists don't consider it organic. It is considered a broad spectrum and might harm beneficials. Since you're using malathion, I'd imagine you're not worried about that. It also kills grub worms when you drench the soil. However, it does NOT kill earthworms. Spinosad is also a primary ingredient in Sluggo PLUS (not the regular Sluggo). Sluggo kills slugs and they added the spinosad to Sluggo Plus. So, if you cannot find bottles with isolated spinosad, you can buy Sluggo Plus. I am one of those that cannot grow beans or peas because the pill bugs eat my live plants before they even have a chance to become established....See MoreBugs, bugs, bugs in my new Palm's soil! Comments (0)I purchased this beautiful majesty palm from Wal-Mart.I t was shipped from Florida, im in Massachusetts. I just fell in love with it. Three weeks later I've come to find that there's a variety of bugs in the soil!!!! I found a dead centipede, live snails, a millipede and who knows what else is in there. I researched the plant after getting it and I read that this plant is an attraction to mealy bugs and spider mites but I have yet to see those. I have four lovely and thriving plants of my own purchased from grocery stores and I've never had this problem, ever. I'm thinking of washing the plant in soap and water and maybe some insecticide and repotting it this weekend. Should I do this or just get rid of it? Any suggestions? I love this plant....See MoreSkybird - z5, Denver, Colorado
