Design pros please help w/ wall color + space?
Comments (87)@tex love love love the oyster 🦪 color a lot!!! Ordered a swatch. @flo thank you 😊 I pulled the rug back and agree! Much better! Sometimes it takes more eyes 😊😊 We enjoy this cozy space so far, where we hadn’t before. I know it’s very hard looking at pictures. But it does look so inviting in person, especially when you walk in the front door or just having the front door open in general. So far I’ve heard many ‘gee. It’s so CALM in here’ comments ☺️ Definitely will not be a TV in here, as the very large upstairs is the ‘cave’ if you will. Well, I’m just sitting around reading a book, having coffee and talking. I’m excited to get going on getting the floors and the walls done and searching for a smaller unit for that wall....See MoreI’m trying to make a decision for the main color of our house.
Comments (2)@Kat V I'm not sure if you are asking for help with a whole house color scheme or if you are thinking you can find one color of off-white that will work in every room. For the latter, I would say you don't have to find one color that will work in every room, even if you choose an off-white. I have one off-white through my downstairs and feel it was a mistake. It looks great in my south facing family room and kitchen with the warm south light on the off-white paint with pale orange undertones, but in my east and north rooms, I get cold blue light most of the day that turns the same orange-undertone paint to mud. For the former, I currently am obsessed with how to develop and execute a whole-house color scheme. I have read many articles that basically say, "here's why they are wonderful" but most give advice I can't really execute. I started a thread for others having the same frustration. If you find any useful articles, please post them. There are several steps on this journey and any article with even one good piece of advice will be valued. https://www.houzz.com/discussions/6392803/great-how-to-articles-on-whole-house-color-schemes By the way, I love your bathroom. In the picture, the green isn't overwhelming. I'd love to see a picture of your eggplant sofa. And I like blue too. Sound like you like greens, blues, and purples. Me too. I chose chocolate brown from dark chocolate to the colors in a mug of cocoa with whipped cream on top. I currently am looking for a great off-white with chocolate undertones, including a memory of a hint of purple pink. Also like off-whites with soft blueish grey green undertones. That might be nice with your eggplant sofa?...See MoreWhole Home Color Scheme Guidance
Comments (15)Benjamin Moore, like SW, also has color consultants in their (company owned) stores - or at least they did before the pandemic. You're not going to find them in a hardware store. The price was very reasonable. Most people have a brand they prefer, so proceed accordingly. Houzz has a lot of articles on developing a color scheme. From working informally with friends it's my observation that some people do have trouble sticking with one style. In one sense it's great that you are open minded, but if you are all over the place you will not end up with a coherent result. You can certainly count on a decorator/designer to give you a coherent result. If you DIY, be tough on yourself to avoid multiple styles. Eclectic is the most difficult style to do well. If you decide to figure it out yourself after doing some research I find it helps to make a list of everything you would like to do. I moved into my third house three years ago so it wasn't my first rodeo. I am also a naturally organized person, so I love lists. I don't know if this approach will help you, but I make a list, group like things together and prioritize the groups so I have a plan. I keep it in a spreadsheet and check things off as I go. That also helps DH who feels the list is neverending. It's nice to be able to look back to see how much you have accomplished. That's not to say I don't change the list a little as I go along, but I don't make major changes. For instance, if you do want to change the flooring, that is best done before you move in. Do all of it at the same time. Then you can go room by room. Also, once you decide on flooring you will have a starting point for the rest of the decor. If you want to utilize furniture you already own that will help to guide your other decisions. While people are attracted to the idea of painting before they move in, wall color isn't usually the first decision point unless you just want white throughout, and even then there are dozens of whites. It's not that bad to paint while you're living there. DH does some of our painting and we had professionals in to do a couple rooms. It wasn't that disruptive. After three years we still aren't done with everything. We are also working with a '90's house. Unless it will drive you crazy to have things undone, take your time and try not to impulse buy. Your kitchen, while not the latest style, is probably still very functional. If you rush into a remodel you may regret it. I chose to do my master bath first because it made me crazy. I'm going to do the kitchen last. Luckily most of us won't have the decor fashion police drop in anytime soon, so we don't need instant perfection. :-)...See MoreI’m trying to decide what wall color &rug goes w/ orange velvet couch
Comments (82)Any of the blues are nice with the orange. Your idea for just using a window treatment with the blue is also nice. I like the window shade Paul used, and also look on Etsy; there are some sellers there with really unique items. I think a plum/eggplant color in your space could also be amazing. I think someone further up in the thread showed a room with that color combo. On an unrelated note: Is anyone else having problems with the site? I can pull up discussions but cannot access the comments, and cannot post new comments. I can apparently comment on posts I’ve previously commented on, and read comments on these posts. However, I can do all of this only if I access it through my Houzz “Activity” menu, and only if I am on Desktop mode on my iPhone. (Which all I use of late is an iPhone and I don’t use the Houzz app.) I’ve never had this issue before, so not sure if it’s site related....See Moreker9
