Numerous Plants to ID Please
Comments (7)1 Lamium, a weed 2 ? 3 It could be Coreopsis Moonbeam 4 Campanula - you'll want to dig this one out right away, very weedy and extremely deep rooted 5 Echinacea, Coneflower 6 Viola 7 Veronicastrum, Culver's Root (nice!) 8 Could be Goat's Beard, more likely Herb Robert 9 Lily? 10 Stachys byzantium, Lamb's Ear 11 Echinacea, Coneflower 12 Asclepias, Milkweed 13 Liriope, Lilyturf The ones I've listed as Echinacea could also be Rudbeckia, they're very similar and frankly confusing to me when not in flower. Perhaps someone else can give you more details, or you'll find out for sure when they bloom....See MoreSuggestions on what to plant please
Comments (32)Welcome to the forum, Ashlie! You asked about artemisia...I grew Silver King awhile back. Loved it and it's aggressive growth wasn't difficult to manage...the texture and colour would be a wonderful foil for your hosta. So would the 'Brunette' cimicifuga. If you want an instant jungle, you could choose tall and full perennials. Look up Veronicastrum and see if you like the foliage. It grows quickly and isn't a diva but has architectural detail. There are also some tall astilbes (some reach 4-5 feet). Ostrich Plume is also interesting. Once all your infra structure is in the ground, then you'll get a better idea about how many big hosta you will need. Sometimes less is more - the bigger the plant, the less plants you'll need. I'd like to suggest you take a peek at Mocc's gardens....bet you'll see what you are looking for. I'm sorry but I can't get my hands on the pic she posted in the last day or so, just for starters. Anyway, thought I'd put in my two cents. It's always fun to be invited to be part of the building process of a new garden. :-) Have fun, enjoy and most of all, please share pics with us when you are done...we go crazy for pictures! Oh and yes, two Wu!!!! :-) Jo...See MoreWhat is this magenta plant?
Comments (22)gardenshine - There are at least 5 plants but just 3 names on the original photo. Deschampsia is the grass in the background. I saw these plantings at the 2012 Olympics. They were a mix of native and non-native plants. Lythrum is native here and there was a lot of it. The only question in my mind was whether this was just a gangly native L salicaria or a named cultivar. Remember, these plantings were put in just shortly before the Games opened, so clumps would not have had much time to form. They were stunning imo and I'm not easily impressed. The annual plantings were also absolutely amazing. 2012 Olympic Plantings...See MoreDesigning with Culver's root
Comments (35)Anna, do you mean the reddish colored plant, if so that's 'Rosy Glow' barberry ... the silvery looking plant behind is actually a 'Ivory Halo' dogwood. North53, your garden is sooo very lovely !! Yes, it's fun to grow out a quantity of any type of perennial to find a bit of variation among the lot and sometimes something really rather desirable. Today, I selecting and culling self sown heliopsis, the occasional one being superior to their named mother plants. I'm gonna begin digging and moving perennials around while they remain in color and before they're frosted off, this way I can better coordinate colors and textures, rather than doing so in the spring and later regretting their siting as so often occurs! Marie, naturally most visitors are very engaging, but a few of them have left me shaking my head! One fella had just walked around in a circle on the grass while he texted, no interest whatsoever in the plants! Then, rather similarly, a lady who puffed on a cigarette while standing in one spot and refusing to walk about the place. I called out to her "Come over here and take a look at the garden!" ... but, she replied "I'm fine, I can see it all from here!" Then, the married lady who bluntly made advances on me and despicable measures in an attempt to get into my life, she was shown the door!...See Morelaceyvail 6A, WV
