need help asap to save branch broken off crabapple
Comments (7)theaceofspades, Thanks very much for replying. That sounds better than letting the entire branch just die...but is there no way I can root the entire branch (as one giant cutting)? I was thinking maybe it could be brought indoors, put in a bucket of water...with something in the water for nutrients and then try the rooting thing where you make a cut, put a little stick in it and put rooting powder in the cut, then damp moss/plastic around it (haven't done it but read about it) - which I know is meant to be done when the branch is still attached to the tree, THEN cut it off after it roots but maybe in this case if the branch is getting water with nutrients in it it would stay alive and root inside the moss/plastic...which would be a bit up the branch from the end that is in the water? :/ :`( *Sigh*...See MoreCrabapple tree -- droopy leaves, unhappy tree
Comments (0)Does anyone have recommendations for cheering up a crabapple tree ('malus' spring snow)? We've had one since spring 2004 and the leaves have always looked droopy (rather pathetic). In 2004 & 2005 the tree had white flowers. In 2006, due to a winter drought, it barely leafed and had no flowers. So far this year about 3/4 of the tree has leaves (the bare branches look like they will eventually sprout leaves). Any advice welcome! Thanks. Comments (18)I pruned my Kouza dogwood over the course of its first 4 years (or so) to open up the interior and remove any crossing branches. This pruning created a well shaped tree, now 20 years later. Yes, remove the lower branches so it is not bushy, if you do not want bushy. Also, envision what it will look like as it matures with the branches you have and want to keep. Remember not to remove more than 20% or the branches in any given year so as not to stress the tree. There are good resources on "young tree training/pruning" which illustrate where to make pruning cuts, shaping a tree properly. Also, prune your tree for the location (such as removing branches which may grow to touch the house)....See MorePagoda dogwoods or crabapple trees?
Comments (4)I think the pagoda is one of the most beautiful trees around (when it's planted as a tree, though, not those bushy multi-stemmed things I've seen at nurseries)but it is, indeed, an under story tree. In the city, mine grow on the east side of the house, getting afternoon shade from both the house and tall trees to the south. The tiered affect of the branches are incredible. The flowers in spring are beautiful, and the trees have grown extremely fast - two to three feet a year -- in moist soil in that protected area. The only problem I have is with squirrels. In my city they are more than bountiful, and they like to feast on both the seeds as they ripen, and the flower buds before they break in early spring. This has resulted in MANY broken branches and chewed off tips. They seem to even like either the bark or the sap under the bark - I've seen them gnaw on a branch. In my country garden this isn't a problem, but the trees grow much slower because of the dryer conditions....See Moresean alexander
