which mail order company best to order fruit trees from
Comments (17)two thumbs up for Schlabach's Nursery in New York! They are Amish so no ordering on the internet nor credit cards taken. They accept orders by mail only. They do use a phone for business purposes and are happy to answer any questions over the phone. Really great selection and pricing. I have purchased from them for my own use and for commercial purposes many times. David and his family do a fantastic job. They offer their apple trees on numerous rootstocks. Their catalog only lists the choices as "dwarf" or 'Semi-dwarf" but if you call and ask they will tell you what rootstocks the apple variety is available on. I always write on the order what rootstock I want and they honor my request. Located in Medina, NY....See MoreAnyone bought online trees from arbor day foundation?
Comments (31)" I got a Dawn Redwood from them in the Spring of '10. It was about a foot tall and the top half died. Nonetheless the tree survived and is approximately 19' tall and looks great. I'm not sure I'd go back and buy from them again though as I'd rather get a more advanced specimen than what they send." Aw man, no pictures?!?! Neat tree. What made you decide on it? My metasequoia came from them a decade ago. Best $10 I ever spent. Honestly for these fast growing trees I dunno if I would risk the transplant trouble and shock of buying a 20 gallon tree. Musser sold me 100 of them a few years back. All were just slightly larger than my Arbor Day single tree and every one of em leafed out. For fast growing easy transplant species with a good story Arbor Day is really ok. Dollar for dollar they MIGHT even compete with for profit nurseries. You just have to have realistic expectations what $10 is going to get you. And yes, be aware big government may help fund the department of conservation trees I have ordered by the bundle....See MoreAnyone buy fruit trees from Farmer Seed in Faribault?

Comments (6)I'm sure there are several on that list that have good fall color. I'm hoping that the Amelanchiers and nannyberries will both have good fall color. I already have two nannyberries and they turned a dark red this fall, maybe a little too dark to stand out a lot but they were still kinda pretty. If you decide to order fragrant sumac for fall color, I wouldn't mind having a couple of those. : ) I plan to add to my order and get some for the garden group at my kids elementary school. Does anyone have suggestions for that. I don't know whether it would be better to order something that most people are familiar with like flowering dogwoods or maybe maybe something more unusual. Is anyone growing amelanchier arborea? Wonder if that's one that Japanese beetles like to munch on. I have a small amelanchier canadensis tree and it gets defoliated badly by something in the summer. I also have another shrub type amelanchier and haven't noticed the leaves getting eaten on them at all....See MoreTim Nichter
