How do I keep cats from eating plants?
Comments (14)Training helps... easier if your cat hates the spray bottle as mine does. They can be taught "no", just like a dog. Some are more stubborn than others though, so good luck. I make a loud "psst" noise, or clap my hands or stomp my foot as I say no firmly, the noise can help startle kitty into paying attention just like a spray bottle. I have glass shelves across most of my growing windows so plenty of space to keep plants out of reach... I also do not allow my cat on hard surfaces, like shelves and tables so that helps a great deal. It takes time, just be consistent. Eventually kitty should form the association of if I do this then that thing I dislike will happen. Dogs are easier, as praising them when you get home for not terrorizing your domicile goes a long way. One day when I have floor plants we may need a re-education session, but I often place my big ZZ plant on an end table near my couch and we havent had any trouble. I do also grow cat grass on occasion, and offer it to her next to her food dish so as to keep the message very clear that this one is ok....See MoreCat chewing dracaena- poisonous?
Comments (9)My cat just started chewing on my Dracaena. I noticed it beginning just this past week after over a year of perfect behavior. I've moved the plant out of reach, but she still manages to pull some leaves off. I've now decided the plant has to go after repeatedly finding bits of chewed leaves in vomit. I've read through what I've found on search engines, and I can only hope there are no lasting side-effects. So far I believe vomiting is the only result of my cat ingesting Dracaena. This sums up the worst of what I've found: "Toxicity symptoms includes but not exclusive to: dilated pupils, breathing difficulty, abdominal pain, increased heart rate and drooling. Since the plant is highly toxic, ingestion in the long term is fatal."...See Morecat chewing cardboard
Comments (11)I found a new vet I'm going to try and have an appointment on wed. Hopefully this isn't health problem. I've noticed she has a lot more energy lately. She always wants to play and goes crazy if you dangle a string in front of her. She is also going over to the kittens and pouncing on them trying to engage them in play when they are sitting or resting. Maybe she has too much excess engery? And my take on the indoor outdoor thing- growing up we had indoor outdoor cats but not many of them lived very long. We didn't live close to the road but still had one cat killed on the road, others were attacked and killed by dogs, poisioned by drinking anti freeze, trampled by a horse, and some did make it to old age. My cats will NEVER be indoor/outdoor kitties. they are perfectly content inside in their climate controlled environment. I had a foster cat that was an indoor/outdoor cat (her previous owners) and I brought her in when I found her with kittens. She lived inside for about 3 months after living outside (her owners abandoned her so she was living outside) for probably about a year. After her kittens were weaned I tried to put her back outside and that cat wouldn't budge. Didn't want any part of the outdoors. She was perfectly content to be a lazy house cat in a safe environment....See Moredo your cats sleep when you do?
Comments (13)You have my sympathy. Once we had 4 Abyssinian cats, whose 12 kittens made nights miserable by running around on top of us and biting our toes. It was like having a herd of tiny wild horses in the room. The remedy was to tire them out before bed. We would drag strings for them to chase around the apartment till they could hardly run any more. Irishdancersgram: "when they get older, they'll probably settle down...." Hah! Yes, that is what usually happens, but for the past few months, our 16-year old, who does sleep for much of the day, has taken to wandering around and practically howling for hours and hours during the night. He is healthy, but too old to be interested in playing, so we can't tire him out. While he cries in that loud, demanding Siamesey way (though he is not Siamese), he is leaping from the bed to the window to other furniture and back again, or running heavily right up my body to look at my face and go "purrup" in that endearing inquisitive way cats have. He is worse in warm weather and at the time of the full moon, and I wonder if there are skunks, other cats, or possums in the back yard, so he is dying to go out there. The most I will let him do at night is look out the window. By around 4:00 or 5:00 in the morning, he is ready to settle down. We are wondering if he is getting a bit senile because he never used to give us so much trouble at night. To my relief, the colder weather now seems to impel him to get under the covers and stay there. No trouble last night....See MoreKate Weinberger
