Onyx tile shower: where to use caulk vs. grout?
Comments (3)We plan on very tiny joints. Are spacers used for very thin grout lines? Yes. Usually they're small tapered spacers called "marble wedges", as seen in the pic below. but Bill Vincent recommended siliconized latex caulk in another thread. Are there particular brands that perform well? Whatever the brand grout you used, that's the brand of caulking you get, as well, and from the same place, and in the same color as the grout. Just about all grout manufacturers now make their caulkings with antimicrobial agents in them to put a stop to mold and mildew. Do we fill the tub with water before caulking? If it's cast enamel, it's not necessary. If it's plastic or fiberglass, you'd do alot better to make sure the installer supports the "belly" of the tub with mortar or foam. It'll go alot further than filling the tub. The reason for filling the tub is so that excessive movement won't stretch the caulking past its limits. Even a better idea is to limit said movement (which is what you do by supporting the bottom of the tub). Also, I remember a thread mentioning using caulk instead of grout in the "corners," but I am not sure if that means just the bottom corners, or the whole vertical seams where the back and side walls of tile meet. Any place where one wall meets another, or a wall meets a floor (or in this case the tub), it should be caulked....See Morehas anyone used glass or irridescent tile on shower floor
Comments (0)I'm using a matte ceramic dahl tile in artisan brown in the shower (if anyone has this and thinks it's too dark let me know!) I want to do a glass or irridescent tile in 1x1 or 2x2 as a chair rail. I've seen suggestions to use smaller tile on floor. My tile guy said it would be cheaper for me to put the glass tile on the floor since I found it at a good price on an internet site than ordering the artisan brown in the small pieces because I would need to buy a box and would have too much left over. Also the irridescent looks thinner than the regular glass tile. Does this mean the glass tile would be more durable for the floor? Also want to know if it shows dirt and soap scum and cleaning....See MoreWhat grout color to use for shower tile?
Comments (13)Hanks everyone! We still haven’t decided yet! Contractor hates us! It’s Bedrosian’s Classic 2.0 Bianco Carrara polished. The floor tile is their 2x2 mosaic in matte. The liner real Carrara marble chevrons. We did a sample board and the marble looks awful with all of the grays, but not sure about mixing white grout for the liner and gray grout for the field tile....See MoreHelp! What shower floor tile would you use with this wall tile?
Comments (7)so the large beige-ish tile is going on the floor and that patterned tile is on the shower wall? can you post a pic of the room? does that large tile come in a 2x2 or 3x3 size? it should. use that. u said it looks busy, but I don't see how. it's a solid look tile. same premise they've done here. used a smaller tile in the same make as the floor introducing any other type of mosaic will look busier. if your large floor tile is a matte finish, it could be cut and used on the shower floor. maybe have it cut in thinner, rectangular strips. they've done it here in the shower...See MoreJohn 9a
