Bathroom Design Dilemma

In a small hall bath, the sink/toilet share a wall as shown, and there is a shower opposite this wall.

The wall with the sink/toilet is designed has bothered me since moving in. Specifically, it seems odd that the mirror stops where the toilet is, instead of spanning the whole wall, and it also seems odd the way the light is above the sink, but off center regarding the mirror,

When the sink and toilet is on the same wall, is it typical use a smaller mirror, vs. extending the mirror across the wall? I guess it could be awkward for a man who is using the toilet to be facing a mirror ...

What is your suggestion for that wall? Just hang a picture in the space above the toilet, and forget about it? Replace the mirror with a full wall mirror, and replace the light fixture with a longer one that spans the mirror?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions/advice.

Well, the mirror you have is neither just over the vanity or covering the whole wall, so that's probably why it looks odd to you. The sink is situated oddly in the vanity, I guess to get a larger sink in a small area. So I would pick one - either a smaller mirror that is just over the sink, or a larger one that covers the whole wall. There is no right or wrong answer - some people prefer smaller over larger, some the other. If it were me I would also replace the vanity as the way it is bothers me. But if you want that size sink that might be impossible in that size vanity, so once again, do whatever suits you best.

Many think this solution old fashioned, but I have always like a counterop that extended across the room along with the mirror.

Here is another way to make the room more custom.

Ellen, I really appreciate the input! Good point about bumping into open shelves! Beth, thanks so much for these great pictures! I love the first nice pic you posted but imagine it might be hard to find a way to inset part of the vanity if it is only a 66-68 inch double vanity. I am trying to figure out what makes the photos without the shelves still look good in spite of the vanities obstructing the tubs. Any sense of the magic formula? :) I like your idea of flipping the shower and tub, but we can't do that due to plumbing issues on the exterior wall; we would lose 4 inches in the shower by padding for shower heads. It's too bad as that would be a much nicer-looking set-up. Thanks again for the great ideas!

I think your countertop remnant is great. The floor choices don’t look like they complement it. What color is the vanity? Look fir a deep or medium solid grey for the floor. Yes, you can reglaze your tub to white. A shower curtain hides the whole thing but if it bothers you, then paint the flowered tiles and price out reglazing the tub.

is this for a tub? That large tile, it's going under the tub on this cement board? or is this a shower floor? I hope its not a shower floor! That wood curb also needs to be completely covered. Can we see how the shower is being formatted for the waterproofing? what if you stacked the large tile on the floor? basically like this. (I think it's too large for that small space. there's going to be a lot of cuts, which is a waste for this large format tile) any chance of doing something diff on the floor? diff tile altogether? you're doing the plain white tile on the wall, the hex on the shower floor, and then you have the small space for the other tile? is the shower tile going in like this? (you'll notice the square tiles on either side in the white) you could do a larger hex tile (this is a 2") and use it for all of the floors. you doing a niche? w/the hex tile? I did this layout for my neighbor. used a recycled white glass tile for the niche. (it's not green) or, do a larger, darker hex or something like this gray I'd rather use a longer tile for the shower, like this. can you get that tile in a larger size? you could use this tile on the outside floor in a herringbone or some other layout even this size is better. looks like a 3x12. you could do this on the floor in a diff type of layout I like this basketweave layout or, try a terrazzo look 24x24 size tile for the floors

Most toilets have an awkward space above. I believe it is a part of the plumbing code. ;) You already have nice art in the room and a designer vanity. I’d leave the wall above the toilet as it is and buy a black tissue box for the toilet + a more upscale soap container for the vanity.

It looks odd maybe because the size of the mirror doesn't quite match the size of the vanity. You can try replacing it with a smaller mirror; If it's inconvenient to keep the light fixture in the center, you can consider placing one on each side.

Professional home lighting offers you more choices.

Fully mirror the back wall and use a loooong linear light , centered between vanity and toilet

I do not understand the sink/vanity/ angle concept, but that's a different discussion: )

I would remove the tile so it is just a backsplash for the vanity. Take down the large mirror and put the one from the left wall over the vanity.

Thank you all for the pictures and suggestions! Very helpful ...

This bathroom will be getting an upgrade:-) The vanity is an odd relic from the prior owner, so will upgrade the vanity/sink, get rid of the racing stripe, and customize the wall with new tile, mirror and light.

I do think it's interesting that no men weighed in about facing a mirror over the toilet ....
