Thoughts on roof ice melt cables
Comments (34)Am grateful for all the comments on cost of ice-melt cable, especially the electrical cost. My neighbor had gutter *tape* put in her gutters over 15 years ago. This was cable embedded in some silver solar material (sort of like NASA heat blankets, I think). This wide tape lays in the bottom of her gutters. Her son said it makes cleaning debris out much easier than with plain cable. I can't find any heat tape for sale now. Since it does seem that it would make cleaning easier (something I need to do a LOT), I wonder why they don't produce them anymore? I did look up the Bylin system mentioned above, and there is also this: http://www.thermaltechusa.com/residential.php These kinds of systems are, of course, a LOT more expensive to install. I don't know how they compare on cost of the electricity. My split level was built in the early 70s. I am constantly cleaning out the gutters in warm weather and having ice bergs hanging off the roof in winter. It is a constant worry. About 5 years ago I had more insulation put in both my attics (split level home) but I still have problems over the center of the lower level roof. This is over the center of the house, incl the kitchen so I guess that's why warmth is melting the snow. This past winter I also had a major ice build up on one of the upper level gutters. It was phenomenal! Do I need to put even more insulation up or what? I am sure any analysis by any company selling ice dam prevention systems or insulation will insist their product is the solution. How do I know what to buy for my house? Thanks for any feedback!...See MoreReplacing Roof - Thoughts on Quote
Comments (5)Anyone who is attempting to sell a job, should be honest about it. The manufacturer warranties are prorated, just like a car battery. Ask the company about them, they should be able to explain the warranty in detail, if they're honest. As far as kickbacks from manufacturers, no. Kickbacks are illegal, and the company is buying from a supplier, most likely a wholesale only supply house. Now, they may get some sort of incentive, but that would be through the supply house. Not sure how the industry is now. However back when I installed, Certainteed had qualifications one had to meet to be a "Master Elite" installer, and that was just one of the requirements, which had to be met in order to sell items labled as "lifetime". Also, you had to use their accessories such as ridge venting, ice/water shield, felt paper....See MoreAcadia white cabinets vs linen white . . . thoughts!
Comments (24)I see a lot of gray in both cloud white and white dove - less in cloud white but it is still there a bit. The Velvet white has no gray in it and is more of a warm white, but no highlighter yellow and lighter than linen white by a few shades. It is still quite a bit darker/creamier than both cloud white and white dove. I did read, in my search for the perfect cabinet color, a decorator (in the House Beautiful 500 best paint colors thing) say that when linen white looks too yellow, he sometimes mixes it with decorator's white. That was too complicated for me and my quick decision but if you have some time, you could buy a sample of each and play with the proportions a bit. . . Oh and trying to find that quote (I didn't find it) - I found this and a picture. . . It's true the whites I use are not all the same shade, not even in one room. I use Benjamin Moore Linen White quite a bit, but I use it in various densities. I mix it with pure white to take the edge off the commercial color, which is always slightly too blue. I do the baseboard and trim in the brightest white because it sparks up the room and really plays up the architecture. The living room walls here are two parts pure white to one part linen white, while the trim is five pure whites to one linen. Linen White ages so well, you don't get tired of it. In my own little house in the country I painted the walls in it 20 years ago and I still like it. Here is a link that might be useful:...See MoreThoughts to improve curb appeal with Mansard roof
Comments (11)I second the blue front door. Any landscaping you do should definitely mitigate the sideways slope of the yard, and the retaining wall idea can help here because it can be shorter on the left side and taller on the right to give everything up at the house a greater feeling of balance. Definitely no uniform hedges which only serve to emphasize the off-kilter effect of the yard. I have to admit that I have a certain soft spot for Mansard roofed houses. If you are looking to modify the dormers, it definitely has to be coordinated with a re-roof of the house, as it will require reworking the shingles around them. If you are looking for a budget approach that doesn't disturb the interior, you could leave the windows where they are currently and build out side walls and a small roof over each so that the end result is a popped out dormer with a recessed window. The added benefit is that the roof extension would shade the windows and then maybe you wouldn't need the awnings....See MoreBeverlyFLADeziner
