Do you need a break?
Comments (4)What would you say are the 'rules of design' that stand to be broken? Personally I don't consider 'out of the box' thinking to be breaking rules. I have never deliberately broken with common sense or with what has been demonstrated to work and this I suspect to be a fools errand. "Rules" suggests an imposition and what might make a more worthwhle enquiry is the 'principles' of design, that is a set of guidelines that have proven to be effective. These principles constitute a view that allows for individual interpretation so "thinking outside the box" is not breaking any "rule"....See MorePlease help! I need to break my lease
Comments (2)well, kicking the ball against a wall is not "having nowhere else to go." Little kids kicking the ball on the ground back and force to one another, or riding trike and squealing--those actually, depending on one's personality, could be pleasant noises to hear outside one's home. And I think you need *first* to tell your landlord of the problem. Documentation (setting up a video camera, or something) might provide him w/ a tool to use against the other tenants. So, if you can, try to get video of the problems, and put that on a disk. Or take a snapshot of the motorcycle, and print it out (or get a print made, if you use film). Write a letter to the landlord detailing these problems. Tell him the time of day the kids play, and request that he come and see it for himself. Tell him you fear that these other tenants will act against you if they suspect you have complained, and request that he investigate these things directly himself, so that the complaints can be clearly seen to be coming from him, independent of you. Then ask if you can move to another unit. Then you have to give him time to fix it, if you want to break the lease without being forced to pay the rent until he finds a new tenant. Your landlord certain doesn't want someone kicking a ball against his wall, so he needs to know. And does he know about the problem w/ the breakers? In order to have any legal leg to stand on, you have to give him a chance to fix these problems....See MoreNeed help making exterior not so plain - Pics included
Comments (15)Thank you for the continued help.:-) I really appreciate it. Oopsie - The view out our front door and porch area is a beautiful one, lots of trees, a windy street and a pond with a fountain. My only hesitation about a front door with glass is the privacy issue. Not so much security, as I think if someone's going to break in they're going to break in. But, I do think about not being able to sneak up to the door and peek through the peep hole to see if I want to answer or not. I have always loved the doors with clear glass with divided grills like I posted above, but the privacy thing sways me away from them. Hmm... A solid door would be cheaper and more private, and I'm glad to hear that at least some of you think it would look okay....See MoreHelp break the tie from the Kitchen Forum Please
Comments (62)Maybe you could also use the harlequin tile in a contrasting colour, say a taupe colour to match the wall, or maybe better, a shade pulled from the counter so that you would still be free to change the paint. That can allow you to combine tile types that don't actually "match." We used tile from three separate companies for the inset design on our backsplash, and it works because each type of tile has a different colour and finish - the background tile is a 2x2 matte maroon, with an inset design set on the diagonal made of shiny tiles in navy blue and forest green. I'm really liking the addition of the harlequin tile; that's a good find. There is somehow just too much of the bars when you do it all in that. I think adding subway tile instead would add to the visual impact of lines, lines, and more lines. The harlequin gives a rest from that, and in doing so, gives the lines a function: leading the eye to the design. I think I might actually be tempted to put in just a quad of contrasting harlequin tiles above the sink as well, if the backsplash is extending along there. KarinL...See MoreCara Fidler
