Fireplace - simple update what would you do?
Comments (7)Some of our colleagues are still focused on telling clients to leave things alone, but we figure if they are on this forum they want change: so let's give it to them! First of all, agree with poster above re TV above fireplace, especially since you have a lot of light coming from the side windows. Install a nice big piece of art. (no large clocks!) Secondly, you would want to balance the design using the same features right to left, for example, go with the same shelves on right and add books and other decor items of . If you want to do TV on right or left, OK., but take off cabinet doors regardless. Then, let's address light fixture: go with a lower pendant to hit the wall midway, with large art behind it, plus tall vases on mantel will add layers/depth. Hope this helps. Best luck!...See MoreHow would you update this fireplace?
Comments (25)I like the wall mount idea for the TV to the left of the fireplace and eliminating the armoire. I also like the idea of doing some built ins on each side of the fireplace and possibly mounting the TV in that with a swing arm for easier viewing. I can't go too high with a TV mount as I have neck issues and it's hard to bend my head back to look up to see the TV. There is only 12" from the end of the shutters to the wall. The depth from the wall to the edge of the hearth is 21". The length of the hearth is 6'. Currently the brick to the right extends 41 1/2". The height of the hearth is 15 1/2" and from the top of the hearth to the bottom of the top shelf is 87". Not sure what the depth of normal bookshelves should be. Maybe balance out the left and right sides of the fireplace with the bookcases? If that was done how high should the brick go up the wall? The hearth needs to stay - we use it to sit on quite a bit and the fireplace is gas so don't want the added expense of having to have it lowered to floor level....See MoreHelp! I need advice on Family Room Paint/Fireplace/Wall
Comments (24)@BeverlyFLADeziner I am liking that! Any suggestions on a blue paint color? Thoughts on if this rug could be placed in the room? (Pic of our current family room) or too much blue? https://www.potterybarn.com/m/products/bosworth-tufted-wool-rug-blue/?cm_cat=Google&sku=9076063&catalogId=84&cm_ite=9076063&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI0cX79KG96AIVOv_jBx1m0gEnEAQYASABEgLD-_D_BwE&cm_ven=PLA&cm_pla=Rugs > Patterned Rugs Any chance you could make fireplace maple again but keep everything else blue? I like the idea of keeping that to tie in to kitchen. Thank you!!...See MoreHow would you update this blank slate?
Comments (10)I agree with Thalia B above that wood trim is making a comeback but I'm seeing slightly different tones in those inspo pics than the one in OP's pic. (For as much as we can trust screen renderings of colours.) Subtle difference but it can make a difference. I love wood trim as well and when I said I'd lighten or darken this trim, I didn't necessarily mean painting it. Also, @jwencel42, to be clear about the fireplace: it's not that it's meh for me; it's that the view is superlative. :) In this room's design, how can one not privilege the natural view that take one's breath away?! :D This view deserves attention and contemplation and 'bringing the outdoors in' usually makes for harmonious design. A well-designed room is one that makes you feel good living in it so function is key. Focal points can only go so far. :) And usually, once people are in a room, they become the focal point....See MoreJ Mig
