Need advice on a new washing machine
Comments (6)I had a "musty smell" with our FL Whirlpool Duet (came with the home, 6 years old now) and I did a little reading to figure out a fix. - I cleaned out the filter trap. Not really dirty. - Ran a load with white vinegar, hot water. Still a bit musty so then ran a load with Borax powder soap. Smell gone for last 6 months. - I always leave the door open and don't use cold water wash. - I see WP pushing a "special cleaning" soap for the FL machines. A bit expensive and waste of money compared to just running vinegar or Borax soap. - I was using liquid soap (cheaper) and not the special "HE" soap. I did catch Tide HE powder on sale at Target and tried it. Wife likes Tide better than the cheap soap I was buying so when she is around I use that. When she is gone I use H&A liquid. Always on sale at WM. I don't notice any cleaning difference and finally got my wife to admit she just likes the smell of Tide. Tide recently went to a new formula for their powder soaps which are suppose to be "better" and require less soap. Have not tried them yet. The cost is higher too. An article in the NYTimes a few months ago talked about how Americans have a tendency to use too much soap when washing clothes. I've played around with the amounts to use, brands, etc... Also, the WSJ had an article talking how 15 years ago all the top loading washers did a great job and the FL (at that time) failed. Now the majority of the washers are FL with few TL available. The FL sell themselves as "saving water/electricity" as the most important feature. I looked at the new washers at Sears and like one new TL machine that sells itself as the same efficiency as the FL. I would like a new machine (when this one breaks) that is about 4.3 cu, our current model is 4.0....See MoreBosch Nexxt 800 or Miele 4840 Washing Machine?
Comments (28)Well, I finally moved into the renovated house and have the following comments about the Nexxt 800 washer. Per ascotgranny above, the manual does not list the rinse temps for any wash cycle. Very likely, because EVERY rinse is WARM! I just learned this today! How DARE Bosch claim that they have a "Hand wash" cycle for very delicate easy care items that require hand washing" Anything I own that requires hand washing also usually requires being washed (and also RINSED) in COLD water! What good does choosing a COLD wash do if your items are then rinsed in very warm water? I washed a load on COLD regular wash and if finished with very warm clothes. To make sure the hoses weren't reversed, I washed a load on HOT regular wash, and it finished with the items the same temp as the cold wash finished! I then washed some slightly delicate items on the Hand Wash setting and they also finished warm! I also had to update this thread with new info., because apparently the Bosch Nexxt 800 washer that I saw at Karl's in NJ has been updated to eliminate the Rinse/Spin button! I stated above that it had the Rinse/spin option, one option that was important to me, and it DOES NOT have it! Be warned of these unadvertised changes, which are negatives against the Bosch 800 imo. I'm going to research other washers and see if I can still get mine replaced due to these disappointments....See MoreNeed help for a new Top Loading washing machine
Comments (7)We have 11 SQs in our business and love them! They recently discontinued the top two models of SQ with timer controls and replaced them with electronic controls. Some other changes are that they now fully fill without having to adjust the water level. They meet water use standards by offering an Eco cycle that uses a spray rinse. There is also a conventional fill the tub rinse on other cycles. My SQ(timer controls)has a spray rinse followed by a tub rinse for the first rinse. I am not sure if the new ones do that for the regular rinse. There also seems to be a third rinse available for those with allergies. We have severe allergies so I do a wash with single rinse and a second light wash with a little water softener to remove detergent and single rinse. I get one warm rinse that way. There is still a basic model available with timer controls....See MoreExplain the love for the Miele tiny washing machines?
Comments (20)Thanks!! Well, after much thought and research this weekend, I'm sold on the Miele's and fine with the small capacity. I've learned a lot here, so thank you all! Now I am just making sure that there is anything so special about the little giants vs their new W1 and T1. From the calls I've made today, it seems people were mostly buying the little giants because that was the biggest they could buy for home use, and that reason now goes away with the W1T1. They do handle a bigger work load and should last longer, but that won't be important to me, considering the cost savings of not getting them. It seems the best feature of the Little giants was to add more water, but I'm just going by what I read and really have no knowledge about the subject. The little giants would have solved my layout problems because the door swing worked better for us, so you are right Rocogurl, but because spending 2k more for two washers to solve my problem seems crazy, I'm going to alter the laundry room design. We were only at the shop drawing stage. We have a drain in the room for a sink and another for the washer, so I'll look at some configurations that will work within those parameters. Nothing will be perfect, but the room was never great anyway. So, it looks like 2 W1's and 1 T1. I don't want to stack them because I hate bending, so I am hoping to find room to put them side by side and on a platform. While a 2nd dyer seems nice, Im thinking the dryer is much bigger than the washer, so we can probably wash two loads and put both in the dryer. I don't dry things with elastics to help the longevity, BUT, because the heat pump dryer is supposed to be so much more gentle, I'm wondering if I'll wind up drying a lot more than I currently do. My clothes are not so special, but I just like my things to last. Any thoughts on if the new dryer will replace hang dry? That was a mouth full !!!...See Moreli_ry83
